John Gerard Dahlem, age 86, of North Port, Florida, passed away on April 12, 2009. He was born on June 11, 1922 in Poughkeepsie, New York and came to North port in 1987 from Rhinebeck, NY. He retired from the New York State Department of Transportation in Poughkeepsie. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a Navigator with the 8th Army Air corps, 446th Bomb Group in England during World War II on missions over Germany. He was an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, having joined in 1948 and a Charter Member of Ecumenical Council No. 5632. He had been given the Scouters Training Award by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America for his work with Troop 28 in Rhinebeck. In North Port he served as President of the 99 year Leaseholders Association in Harbor Cove and a member of the Board of directors of Harbor Isles. He is survived by his wife, the former Agnes Elizabeth King, five sons by a previous marriage, Thomas P. of South Lyons, MI, Michael P. of Windsor, CT, Stephen P. of South Glastonbury, CT, Joseph G. of Rhinebeck, NY and John N. of Huntersville, NC; two sisters, Bernice Dolan of Wappingers Falls, NY, Anita Brokx of Severna Park, MD and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Teresa Schattle and Joan Synnett. Funeral services were private for the family. Farley Funeral Home in Venice, Florida is handling the arrangements.
