John was my Sunday school teacher in Sugar House so many years ago. He was the first Mormon that I came into contact with who questioned the African American / priesthood issue. His well-reasoned arguments directly confronted misunderstanding and misuse of scripture. It may be hard today to remember today how fearless it was then for him to speak so openly on that topic.
