John Paul Uldrick
DONALDS, S.C.
John Paul Uldrick, 85, passed away on October 11, following a series of complications in recent months after suffering a debilitating stroke.
A native of Donalds, South Carolina, he was the son of the late John Robert and Bertie Mae Smith Uldrick. Retired as a Professor Emeritus from the United States Naval Academy, he taught in the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1966 until 1989 and served as the first civilian chairman of the Department in the early to mid-1970s. Dr. Uldrick was also a long-time researcher for the Naval Ship Research and Development Center (NSRDC) in Annapolis, Maryland. Upon his retirement, the Secretary of the Navy presented to Dr. Uldrick the Meritorious Civilian Service Award.
Paul attended Clemson University where he earned Bachelors of Civil (1950) and Mechanical (1954) Engineering, and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (1958). He earned a PhD in Engineering Science and Mechanics from the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1963. He taught in the Engineering Department at Clemson as an Assistant Professor from 1956 to 1960 and as an Associate Professor from 1963 to 1966. He was a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and a Captain in the Air Force Reserves until 1965.
Dr. Uldrick was listed in several honorary and scientific publications including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, American Society for Engineering Education, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
He was an active member of several churches, including the Severna Park Baptist Church in Severna Park, Maryland, where he served as a Trustee and chairman of the Board of Deacons. He also served on the Board of Trustees at Severn School, a private school located in Severna Park.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jann-Paul Uldrick and Alan McCarty of Raleigh, N.C., his sister, Jane Uldrick Stone of Donalds, S.C., and beloved nieces, nephews, and great and great great nieces and nephews. He was predeacesed by his brothers Bob Uldrick of Donalds, SC and Tom Uldrick of Belmont, California. He was married for 56 years to the late Johnnye Murdock Uldrick, who passed away in 2010.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home at 1701 Millbrook Road in Raleigh at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 22. The family also plans to hold a memorial service in late November at the Mount Bethel Baptist Church near Belton, South Carolina.

Joyce and I were saddened to read about Paul's death. We remember him from our days at Bethlehem ARP Church many years ago. Please know that the family is in our thoughts and prayers.
