LEROY JONES Obituary

Leroy "Cat" Jones, age 77, of Kansas City, MO died Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at St. Joseph Hospital from lung cancer. He was born August 29, 1936 in Crandall, TX. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 11 a.m. at The United Believers Community Church, 5600 E. 112th Terr., Kansas City, MO (Hickman Mills Road and 112th Terr.) Visitation starts at 10 a.m. the same date. Mr. Jones graduated from Burnett High School, Terrell, TX in 1956. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wiley College, Marshall, TX in 1960. After a couple of unsuccessful tryouts with the NFL, employment began in Kansas City as a juvenile court officer. Then, he worked as an agent with Aetna Life and Casualty Insurance for several years. Afterwards, he owned, operated auto parts stores in Kansas and Missouri and acquired multiple real estate properties. For over 40 years, he succeeded as an entrepreneur in the restaurant, bar and club industry. He co-owned The Fifty Yard Line Club and Buck's Lounge with KC Chief, Buck Buchanan. In later years, he owned the Birch Tree Lounge and The Sideline Bar and Grill. Upon retirement in 2007, Mr. Jones spent premium time with friends/family and exercised at this favorite athletic club routinely. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Hattie Mae Jones; sisters, Dorothy Hall, Pearlie Williams, Callie Daniels; daughter, Vickie Jones and brother, Frank Jones, Jr. He was married to Erma Dale Robinson (deceased), leaving a surviving son, Marchetti Jones, Jefferson, TX. His son, Roy Lee Spearman Jones resides in Minneapolis, MN; daughter, Latoya Jones lives in Lee's Summit, MO; grandchildren, Rachel Holley, Genesis Holley and Alexander Hudson reside in the Texas area along with five great-grandchildren (one on the way). His brother, James Jones, (Leora) lives in Dallas, TX. Leroy always supported his family. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and more that will miss him dearly. Mr. Jones final resting place will be in Texas after a second service at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 1 at Shiloh Baptist Church, 321 Frank St., Terrell, TX 75060. I knew Leroy from the KCAC. I was just scanning some old emails from my father (Dr. Jerome Mindrup) where he wrote about Leroy "He hit the handball harder than anyone I ever played." My dad played a lot of handball so that's quite the compliment.
