Mary Ellen Atwood, a dedicated educator, beloved family member, and an active community servant, passed away on October 26, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on August 28, 1935, Mary's life was by her passion for education and her commitment to helping others.
Mary’s impressive career in education spanned over 25 years at The University of Akron, where she served as an Early Childhood Professor and was the founding director of the University Day Care. Her contributions to early childhood education were significant, leading her to co-found the Decker Family Development Center in Barberton and the Adult Literacy Program at Woodridge Elementary School. She also played an integral role as an evaluator for the Early Childhood Society.
Mary earned her academic credentials with a Ph.D. in Sociology from The University of Akron, following a Master’s degree in Special Education from the same institution and a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Iowa State University. Her education began at Washington & Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia, and continued at Woodstock Boarding School in Mussoorie, India.
In recognition of her unwavering dedication to her field, Mary received numerous honors, including the Ohio Association for Young Children Early Childhood Award, the Iowa State University College of Family and Consumer Sciences Professional Achievement Award, and the University of Akron Distinguished Alumni Award.
Outside of her professional achievements, Mary was deeply involved in her community. She served on the Children's Services Board Advisory Committee and was a Girl Scout Leader. As a co-founder of Marriage Encounter United Methodist, she contributed to both the State and National governing Boards. Additionally, Mary volunteered for the Kairo Prison Ministry at the Marysville Reformatory for Women and the Northeast Ohio Pre-release Facility, embodying her commitment to service.
A lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, Mary maintained a strong spiritual foundation throughout her life. Her adventurous spirit took her across the globe; she had the unique privilege of walking on all seven continents and visiting all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Mary delighted in exploring lesser-known destinations, further broadening her understanding of the world.
Mary celebrated her 70th wedding anniversary with her family and friends on her birthday in 2025, marking a remarkable milestone in a loving union with her husband, Glenn Arthur Atwood. She is survived by her daughter, Ruth M Atwood, and her spouse, Kathy Shatzer; her son, John Aaron Atwood, and his spouse, Debra Atwood; and her cherished grandchildren, Aaron Tyler Atwood and EmmaRose Atwood.
Mary was preceded in death by her father, Jacob Douglas Ensminger; her mother, Mary Ensminger; and her children, Keith Allen Atwood, Robert Mark Atwood, and Terilyn Atwood.
Her legacy of love, education, and community service will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Mary Ellen Atwood will be remembered for her compassionate spirit, tireless advocacy for children and families, and an incredible capacity for joy as she embraced life and the world around her.
