Mary Gibson, age 88, passed away on October 30, 2025. Mrs. Gibson was a member of Seven Springs Church in Lithia Springs, Georgia. She was a dedicated homemaker and a paraprofessional kindergarten, middle and high school teacher in the Cobb County School System for over 23 years. She and lead teacher Betty Smith initiated one of the first Head Start programs in Cobb County at Austell Elementary School. She also taught Sunday School and served in many summer VBS programs. Her heart loved children deeply.
Mrs. Gibson was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Clarence Gibson; her daughter Carmen Roberts; her parents Charlie and Mildred Whitehead; her granddaughter Stephenie Roberts; and her sister Ann Hedgepath.
She is survived by:
Her children: David (Tami) Gibson of Florida, Lynn (Ottis) Bolin of Georgia, and Kenneth (Tammi) Melton of AlabamaHer son-in-law Tom Roberts of GeorgiaHer sister Charlette McCorkle of GeorgiaTwelve grandchildrenTwenty-four great-grandchildrenFour great-great-grandchildrenA Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 2:00 PM at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel in Marietta, Georgia, with Bishop Jim Bolin officiating. Burial will follow on November 18, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. Family will receive friends on Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital in memory of Mary Frances Gibson.
