December 12, 1947- February 27, 2010 Mike Loftus gave up his valiant fight with Alzheimer's disease on Saturday, February 27. He was 62. Mike is survived by his wife, Kathy; sons Conor and Daniel; brother Tracy Loftus, and sisters Patricia McAnany and Mary O'Neill. He also leaves behind many in-laws, nieces and nephews and friends who feel the deep loss of Mike in their lives. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Patrick Loftus, and his mother, Mary Mehan Loftus. Mike grew up in Kansas City; he attended St. Francis Xavier grade school, Rockhurst high school, and graduated from UMKC with a degree in English. He worked for Coca Cola through high school and continued this job as he worked his way through college. His first professional occupation was with Pepsi Cola, where he worked for many years. For the past 20-plus years, he was with the Missouri Lottery, where he retired as the regional sales manager. Among the many things Mike will be remembered for are his deep appreciation for music, his extensive knowledge of the Civil War, World War II and history in general. Mike also had a consuming interest in NASCAR and NHRA, football, and, of course, his red Corvette. Mike organized family vacations to include Civil War battlefields and monuments and the Football Hall of Fame. With music in his genes, Mike organized a rock 'n' roll band in the mid-60s called "The Cavaliers." As lead singer, Mike and the band played many venues and is remembered for belting out popular 60s tunes like, "Heat Wave." With his dedication to knowledge and interest in people, Mike enjoyed a lively conversation with family, friends and strangers alike. He was generous with his time and made himself available to help anyone who asked. Beyond all of these aforementioned interests, Mike will most certainly be remembered for the unconditional love he expressed for his wife, Kathy. Their romance began in 1965, and they were wed in 1980. It would be difficult to find a greater love between two people. Mike's intelligence, incredible memory, sense of humor, quick wit and genuine love for life made him a man who was admired and loved by so many. His absence leaves a permanent hole in the lives of those whom counted Mike as a friend, brother, father and husband. May he rejoice now in the love and peace of God. The rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. Friday, March 5, at Muehlebach Funeral Home, 6800 Troost Ave., Kansas City, Mo., followed by visitation until 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas More Church, 11822 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Mo. Private interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer's' Association be given in Mike's name.
