Midge O'Neil Obituary

Midge O'Neil
May 2, 1943 - July 28, 2023
Wichita, Kansas - Margaret "Midge" A. O'Neil's beautiful and inspiring life ended on July 28, 2023. She was 80 years old. She was born on May 2, 1943 in Tulsa, OK, the daughter of Robert F. and Lura Margaret (Robbins) Walters.
Midge graduated from East High School in Wichita, Kansas, then went on to complete her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Kansas in 1965. She completed her Master's Degree in Education at Wichita State University in 1996. She loved children and taught students with learning disabilities and behavioral challenges for several years at Sedgwick High School.
In her earlier years, Midge was an accomplished swimmer and competed at the National level. She also started the synchronized swim team in Wichita with her best friend and coached for many years. More recently she enjoyed tennis, skiing with her grandchildren, nurturing her flowers, playing with her beloved dog, Haven, and traveling.
Midge valued her family above all and was affectionately known as "Mama Midge." She was a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, neighbor, tennis partner, teacher and friend. Her thoughtful and generous approach toward life inspired many. Having been through several challenges in her life, her resiliency and toughness were admirable. Midge had a special gift to bring family and people together. This was evidenced by the Walters Family Gatherings that she hosted at her house. She also had a goal of making memories with her grandchildren which is exactly what she did. Midge touched the lives of so many and will be missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dr. Jack R. O'Neil and infant son David. Her son, Michael J. O'Neil also passed on July 28, 2023. She is survived by her three sisters: Suzanne Walters (Denver, CO), Virginia Henderson (St. Louis, MO), and Roberta Buchanan (Scottsdale, AZ). She is also survived by her two children: Margaret "Peggy" O'Neil Sawyer and husband Brian (Boise, ID) and Dr. Patrick W. O'Neil and wife Sara (Camdenton, MO) and eleven grandchildren: Brayden, Margaret "Maggie", Molly, Elesha, Ava, Eli, Layla Jack, Grant, Margaret "Mae", and Brynn.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, August 11th at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Wichita, Kansas where she was married and a member of the church for 75 years. A reception will be held following the service in the Church Parlor followed by a private family burial.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Botanica, The Wichita Gardens. Share condolences at www.cozine.com. Services by Cozine Memorial Group-Cozine Life Events Center.

What a nice memory for me, of Midge, today. Doesn't seem that long ago, but ---- She was a fun "partner" in synchronized instruction, always a great smile for anyone/everyone. Yes, she is missed!

Midge and I met when I began assisting in the coaching of the Lassenettes Synchronized Swim Team, back about 50 years ago. Very quick to assess the physical ability of any of the girls, I learned from her about coaching and judging that sport. She was a "quick friend" over the years. My prayers for the family as they work thru her wonderful memories.

I am so sorry to learn of Midge's passing. I was hoping for an opportunity to see my cousin again. I pray for comfort for her own dear family and for my cousins, her sisters, as well. May the love of family and friends surround you and the Spirit of the Lord uphold you and encourage you.

I have so many great memories of Midge. From playing tennis together, spending the day at the River Festival, to her hosting the rehearsal dinner for my wedding in her home. In all of the memories, I see her sweet smile and hear her kind laugh. Sending prayers and love to Peggy, Patrick, and all of her family and friends. She was a bright light and we be so missed.
