Nicholas Janetos, Dover native, passed away, at age 89, on Thursday February 23, 2006 at the Wentworth Douglas Hospital. Dr. Janetos had been a highly regarded chemist, making a career with several leaders in the chemical industry.
Nick was born on April 10, 1916, in Dover, to Simon and Chapralia Vasilos Janetos. He graduated from Dover High School and then went on to receive his B.S. from U.N.H. in 1938. He was drafted for military service in 1941 and served in Italy and in Brazil. Nick retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the U.S. Air Force in 1946.
Upon his return from military service, he married Wilma Clara Weaver (deceased 09/27/1999) and began work as a chemist for Firestone Tire & Rubber in Noblesville, IN. In 1951, he received a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Indiana University.
He worked as a research chemist for DuPont in Seaford, DE and Kinston, NC from 1951 until 1955. In 1955, Dr. Janetos joined Owens Corning Fiberglass in Ashton, RI, where he was employed as a chemist until his first retirement in the mid 1970’s.
Early retirement did not suit Dr. Janetos, so, he went back to work as a chemist for APM (Aircraft Porous Media) in Pinellas Park, FL, before retiring, finally, in the early 1990’s.
On February 11, 1976, National Inventors Day, Dr. Janetos was honored with an Inventor's Award from Owens/Corning. He had been named an American Man of Science in Who’s Who. Nick was a member of the American Chemist Society, the American Association of Textile Chemists & Colorists, the New York Academy of Science, the American Legion, the Lions Club, as well as Sigma Pi, Phi Lambda Upsilon and Alpha Chi Sigma.
Nick returned to the Dover family farm (104 Gulf Road) in 1999. He enjoyed staying active and watching sports.
He is survived by three sisters; Angeline Banas of Dover, Christine McLain of Miami Springs, FL, Carolyn Snyder of Westbrook, ME. two brothers; Peter and John Janetos both of Dover as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three sisters; Florence Janetos, Evelyn Janetos and Elizabeth Drouin. two brothers; George, Costas and Dion Janetos.
Relatives and friends may call from 4:00pm to 5:00pm, Tuesday evening, February 28, 2006 at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave. Dover.
Military honors service will be held at 5:00 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home by officers and members of the Barrington American Legion Post #114.
