Lieutenant Colonel Nickolaus Ambrose Kueber, age 91, “slipped the surly bonds of earth…and touched the face of God”, on Friday, October 31, 2025, at his home. He was born in Hubbard County, Minnesota, near the headwaters of the Mississippi, on December 7, 1933.
Nick grew up in a large family on his Parent’s farm outside of Park Rapids, Minnesota. Hard work and faith played significant roles throughout Nick’s life. Together with his brothers, he enjoyed outdoor activities including working the family farm, hunting, fishing and logging. Nick loved his country, proudly serving as an Air Force Fighter pilot. Shortly after graduating from Park Rapids High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, and after completing advanced testing, was accepted into pilot training. While in the Air Force, Nick served in a variety of roles, and at a variety of locations in the United States and overseas, including two tours at Truax Field in Madison, in the 61st and 325th Squadrons and in Vietnam. Nick was a wing test flight officer, a maintenance test pilot and a combat pilot. While stationed in England he served as Maintenance Control Officer and Assistant Chief of Maintenance. Nick flew several types of AC, including his favorite, the F102. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring in 1974. He was recognized for his performance throughout his career, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. Despite these acknowledgements, he downplayed his achievements, believing he was only doing his job!
Early in his career, while stationed at Williams Bay, Wisconsin, Nick fell for a local girl, and married Delores Seno, on June 29, 1957. Together they traveled the world and raised their three children: Steven, Susan and Scott. Upon retiring from the Air Force, Nick and Delores settled in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Nick completed his working career for the USPS in Madison in 1998. After his second retirement, he and Delores stayed busy caring for their home, traveling with friends and enjoying their grandchildren. Nick also thoroughly enjoyed playing golf with Steve and Scott (more strokes equaled more fun)!
Nick attended Church and became involved in congregations in every community he moved to and was a long-time member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Sun Prairie, serving on the Board of Properties/Maintenance and as an usher. Throughout his life, Nick valued spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed his role as a father, always wanting the best for his children and grandchildren and never losing his small-town family values. Nick was actively involved in his children’s activities and enjoyed watching and cheering on his grandchildren at sporting, music, and other school events. Nick loved his children equally, and his capacity to love increased with the addition of each Grandchild and Great Grandchild. In his later years, Nick loved nothing more than spending time with them, sharing many family stories and his wisdom. Along with Delores, they often hosted military families and friends for dinner, and on more than one occasion, they opened their home to friends who needed their love and support. Generosity was at the heart of their partnership.
Throughout his life, Nick maintained close ties with his 8 brothers and 2 sisters. When His sister Maggie became ill, he made numerous trips to Minneapolis to help and care for her. He also journeyed to Alaska to care for his younger brother Marse when he became ill. Nick continued to maintain relationships with family and friends near and far. Service to his country and love for his family were grounded in following Christ.
Nick is preceded in death by his parents Herman and Otillia (nee Fiedler), siblings: Joe, George, Leo, Barney, Mary, Maggie, Pete, Marse, and Paul, as well as his wife Delores and many other family members and dear friends. Nick will be lovingly remembered by his brother Duane (Chris); his children: Steven (Koreen), Susan (Alan) and Scott (Annette); Grandchildren Torrie, Daniel, Jacy (Brad), Joshua (Kate), Jon, Zachary, Sydney and Andrew; Great-Granddaughters Briella and Brynnleigh as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family would like to thank the Doctors and Staff at William S Middleton Veteran’s Hospital and Madison East VA Clinic in Madison, and Sun Prairie First Responders.
Visitation will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Thursday, November 6th from 10-1130; his service will follow in the sanctuary at 1130. A luncheon will be held immediately following. Burial will take place at the 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove, Wisconsin.
