Oscar Anderson Obituary

August 20, 1932 - October 24, 2016
Oscar Parley Anderson passed from this earth on October 24, 2016. Oscar was born to Swedish immigrants, Carl Algot and Signe Bertina Anderson, in Rock Springs, Wyoming on August 20, 1932. Oscar was preceded in death (1991) by his wife of 34 years Emilee Vyvial Anderson and his eight siblings.

He was raised in Superior, Wyoming, where his father worked as a coal miner. Oscar told many tales of growing up in the depression and war years. He often told the story of tipping outhouses on a Halloween night, getting caught, and then having to set them aright the next day.

Upon graduation from high school in 1950 Oscar went to work in the coal mine. Finding that particular endeavor distasteful, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952. Oscar was then stationed in Korea during the Korean War. Other duty stations included New Mexico, Hawaii, Texas, and Germany. During his twenty-three year career with the Air Force Oscar achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.

Upon retirement from the Air Force, Oscar went to work as bank officer with First National Bank of San Antonio and then with the United States Postal Service from which he retired in 1991.

Upon retirement from the work-a-day world, Oscar undertook the task of holding local politicians accountable. While some might have considered this a Quixotic effort he had an impact as politicians responded to his many missives either sent directly to them or published as editorials in newspapers.

Oscar endeavored to remain well informed on contemporary issues so he could form solid opinions and defend his position. Many a person regretted challenging his positions as he could present a well reasoned and passionate argument. One might conclude the same ability was passed on to his children.

Oscar was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars post 8315 in Schertz and American Legion post 667 in Universal City.

Oscar and Emilee set up residence in Schertz, Texas where their children grew to call it home. Oscar is survived by his children, Ellen Kathleen Kennedy of San Antonio, Susan Patrice Hartzog (Earl) of Schertz; Carl Aaron Anderson (Cynthia) of Kyle, TX; Diana Lynn Hottle (Keith) of San Antonio; Jacqueline Marie Lerche (Don) of Schertz; and Glenn Alan Anderson (Michelle) of
Crane, TX as well as 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.

A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. In honor of Oscar's wishes, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the UT Health Science Center to support patient care for those suffering from cancer. Checks may be made to UT Health Science Center, and send to UTHSCSA, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive - MC 7835, San Antonio, Texas 78229. Memo line: Anderson Memorial Fund.

I met uncle Oscar as a child visiting Wyoming with my family. I especially remember having dinner with him and his family when I was in the Air Force stationed at Lackland. He came and picked me up and drove me back.
Thanks Uncle for getting me stationed back to California at Travis AFB.
You will always be remembered.

Jackie thank you for sending the obituary on your Dad. I met him some years ago at a dance and enjoyed dancing with him. We became email buddies and he loved to tease me with his political views. He was indeed a great man and he will be missed.

I first met Andy when he came to work in our Maintenance Control Administrative office. From my very first conversation with him I knew I was in it for the long haul. We had completely opposite views. I was retired Navy and a Vietnam River Rat while he let me know his Air Force background and I was really respectful of that. Having been away from active duty so many years I had lost fact of the respect one has for senior NCO's until Andy came along. He never lost fact that he was one of the top NCO's and carried himself in the same manner although he was now a civil servant. I found myself a better person after having known Andy. My sincerest condolences to the family. Until we meet again my friend.

I, and several of my still close friends, worked for Andy at First National Bank in San Antonio in the late '70s. He was a rascal and a rebel and the best boss ever!a couple of things he always said which made us laugh: You've been out chasing rabbits and barking at the moon, and , when heading out pay stubs, you mean they let you work here and pay you too. We still talk about Andy and remember him with great fondness.

Uncle Andy significantly contributed to my journey in the Air Force. I have been most grateful for his words of encouragement. His professional bearing and service pride helped shape my own career. I remain grateful for the journey in a career that I could have never planned. I am also most thankful that Aunt Emily brought him into our larger family.

Andy was a friend to many and those who knew him loved him for his gentle way of speaking, his quick wit and that ever ready smile. He was a smooth dancer. It was so good seeing him just days before he passed, so glad I was welcomed with that big hug and smile. Walk with Angels Andy! Dance with your beloved Emilee.

Family and Friends,
Please accept the our family's condolences during this sad time. We will miss the man who we knew as "Grandpa" to the Hartzog family. We should celebrate his life and his selfless service to our country. We will always remember him as a bike ride away from Pecan Drive and there for us. He taught us how to play washers in the back yard and work on nearly anything in the garage. As we grew up. we would see him zipping through the neighborhood with his headband and white t-shirt; and later would share a beer at the local VFW. He will be missed.
Sincerely,
The Hartzog Family in Maryland - Charlie, Kelli, Charlee, and Keegin
