Phyllis Blackwell Obituary

Phyllis Joy Blackwell, age 85, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017, in Keller, due to complications from Alzheimer's. Memorial service: 10 a.m. Saturday at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum in Colleyville. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions can be made in Phyllis' memory to the Alzheimer's Association. Phyllis was born June 28, 1931, in Maple Grove, Mo., to Cecil and Mildred Hermann. She spent her childhood working on the family farm and attended Golden City High School, often staying in town with a family friend to reduce long commutes back to the farm. After graduation, she met her future husband, Maurice Glenn Blackwell of Carthage, Mo., while working in the abstract office of the Jasper County Courthouse. Phyllis verified documents submitted to the court house by Maurice, who worked for a title company. After a brief courtship, they married Feb. 10, 1952. In 1973, she and Maurice, also known as "Blackie," along with sons Michael and Timothy, moved to Bedford where they later opened a welding supply company. After raising both children, she managed the office at home while Maurice handled sales, together building a successful business until its closing in 2010. When not working, Phyllis loved to entertain in the home and around the pool. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge with friends, gardening, crafts and working on her tan. Phyllis also supported Maurice's political career as a Bedford city councilman. During her later years, she and Maurice developed an inseparable bond that strengthened each day. Despite the debilitation of Alzheimer's, Phyllis remained a devoted wife and mother and maintained her dignity until the end. The family gives tremendous thanks to all of the caregivers who helped Phyllis through the difficult times of the disease. Survivors: Phyllis is survived by husband of nearly 65 years, Maurice; sons, Michael and wife, Louise, of Bedford and Tim and wife, Stacey, of Keller; sister, Sally Breshears of Jefferson City, Mo.; niece, Kelly Graber and great-nephew, Zach, of Keller; and other nieces and nephews.

Dear Blackie :
I just found out about the passing of Phyllis and I am very sorry for you loss. I know it's been a long time without contact and i truly regret that. I fondly remember the times at the house in Bedford and pool parties we had with the two of you. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and the boys, she was a great sweet lady, please accept my condolences and may she rest in peace.

Maurice and family, now we know why we stopped receiving the Christmas letters Phyllis always wrote. We are sorry she was stricken with this terrible disease. Our love to all of you. We used to have such good times together with our friends when you lived in Carthage. Peggy Hill Egan is still living in AZ but she just lost her wonderful husband Earl when he passed away around the New Year. Deepest sympathy. Elliott and Jacqui

I have so many fond memories of my Aunt Phyllis.
I considered her my other Mother and I have been forever grateful to her and Blackie for taking me under their wings when I first moved to Texas in my early 20's.
She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by the many lives she touched so deeply.
I hope you are on a big raft in the heavens floating around a beautiful blue pool of water free of the debilitating disease that stopped you from doing that over the last decade. That's the Phyllis I will remember!
Eternal love from me and Zach.
