I was also touched by Prof. Hiltner during my years at CWRU. She told me what apple pies and motherhood meant when Prof. Baer often used in his group meetings with us, a group of foreign students who just arrived from abroad. She had served as a cushion and a big sister figure to a lot of us. I was so happy for her to see the multilayer coextruded sheet project led to the establishment of a NSF research center at Case. Prof. Hiltner played an important part in my development and I truly appreciate it.

Professor Hiltner is the kindest, wisest, most thoughtful person I've ever known or met. I'll never forget that many times, when she came to my rescue during group meetings when I can’t interpret the data. Her giggling smile is still vivid in front of my eyes. “Oh My, My….” she said while smiling. Whenever I did something stupid, she explains to me why and make sure I understand the mistake to avoid it in the future. Her laughter made me at ease and felt forgiven like a child in front of his mom. She taught me so patiently the many English words and idioms that were not apparent to me. I will never forget the summer language school and how it benefited me later on, which I would never be able to afford if it was not because of the kindness from Prof. Hiltner. The many opportunities she thought and laid out for her students like me have led us to a career that is as successful as it can be. I am so grateful I have a mother in Cleveland who took me in and looked after me during the toughest transition years in my early years in the States. She taught me to be a scientist, take responsibility and think thoroughly and I still carry those lessons with me today. Even though I am not the one with best presentation and talking skills, she is not afraid of sending me to conferences at times and sit patiently in the audience with Prof. Baer, looking at me with support and hope. In the 6 years at Case, I know clearly how much love I felt on the 4th floor of KHS.

My thoughts are with Anne's family and friends. Wonderful memories of growing up in Williams Bay, WI and the Hiltner family.

My husband learned so much from Dr. Hiltner who was his adviser through undergrad, graduate and post doc work at Case. We are grateful for her guidance. I will remember her smiling and dancing with Dr. Baer at their holiday parties. Our condolences to her family and friends. Rest in peace.

I met Anne in the spring of this year. She was an impressive woman with such courage, strength and dignity. She shared some books with me and I will never forget how she touched my life. To her family and friends, I am sorry for your loss.
