Robert Frank Bennett

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Bob from this life but joyful that he is now in the Lord's hands. He was a friend and CGA classmate, and I will cherish his memory forever. My condolences to his family.

I am sitting here looking at as I call him Mr. Bob's picture..saddens my heart. I was going to be his caregiver but the almighty God is taking care of him now. I had the pleasure of working with Captain Bennett during his tenure with the Charleston Branch Pilots Assoc. He was such a tremendous resource for insight into the historical data on the Federal and State regulations governing First Class Pilotage in NC, SC, and GA. He also had a gerat sense of humor. Charleston has lost one of its great seafaring icons. I enjoyed his wit and wisdom as we sat together on the Maritime Security Commission. He will be missed by the many he mentored. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Bob was a good friend and mentor. A fellow Coast Guard Academy graduate, officer, and "M" type, he gave his advice and counsel freely...and I took him up on it on several occasions. I have known Bob these past 16 years while living here in Charleston...and was always happy to see him around the waterfront. I will miss him greatly. May he rest in peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his devoted wife Barbara, and daughters Lorri and Susan.

I have had the honor of serving the past eleven years of civilian maritime career with Captain Bennett at the Charleston Branch Pilot Office. I will miss his counsel and leadership. And most of all how he could make a story from 2010 into a story about the lifesaving service of 1870 without skipping a beat. I will miss you Bob.

Bob and I were roommates during Swab Year at CGA. While I never completed the program, Bob was the second classmate to contact me when my name was added to the Academy Alumni Association rolls a couple of years back. We had several frank "e-discussions" in recent years and it was gratifying to find we were in agreement in all the issues I can recall. He helped keep my Coast Guard spirit burning.
Rest in Peace, Bob ... you've been a good friend. As the merchant sailors of old used to...

My deepest sympathies to the Bennett family. I first met Bob in the USCG Marine Inspection Office, New York City. During my on-the-job training there, Bob taught me how to inspect tank barges. I then later served with him in USCG headquarters when he was the aide to Admiral Murphy. Bob was one of the most brilliant USCG officers I knew and a very dedicated one. We all thought he should have been promoted to rear admiral.

I always enjoyed talking with Captain Bennett and appreciated his support of the Coast Guard. He was an inspiration and an example to those of us who were far junior to him.
