Former Gov. Robert W. Scott, a folksy and plain-spoken member of North Carolina's most famous political family, died this morning at age 79.

Scott served as the state's chief executive from 1969 to 1973, a time of social unrest arising from racial divisions and the Vietnam War. Scott was...

Not sure what to say?

Read through these tributes to Bob Scott, and you find a common thread. This good man impressed all who knew him as kind, warm, optimistic and never too serious about himself. As a television farm news reporter, I was privileged to get to know him through the years. But the most memorable time I had in his company was on a 1975 N.C. trade mission to the Soviet Union. Most of the mission members were unwilling to get their boots muddy, so Gov. Scott and I broke away from the group to visit the...

To the Scott Family -- I wish for you the joy of wonderful memories of your husband and dad. I was a faculty member of the Community College System and regard Gov. Scott as the most effective leader that the system has had. I appreciated so much his warmth, kindness, and wonderful sense of humor. It was truly a privilege to serve under his leadership. My sympathy to all of you.

Bob Scott was an honored member of the family, who obviously meant a great deal to my father and mother, who had the opportunity to spend much more time with him than I did. I lived so far away (I just moved to NC a couple of years ago) that I was not able to see him in person very often, but everything I ever heard about him was complimentary. I know that the family and the State of North Carolina will miss him very much, even though he has undoubtedly moved on to an even better place now....

Mr. Scott was admired and respected by me and my family a great deal. A true great North Carolinian/American

It is sad that our young people today and those working in State Government never had a chance to know and work with Bob Scott. In 1968 I worked as a volunteer "Bob Scott Girl" passing out campaign literature at the new North Hills Mall. I had to wear a white blouse and black skirt. I don't know who came up with that "getup" but from that day until his last day on this earth I have loved Bob Scott. He was truly a Governor of all the people in North Carolina and had such a wonderful sense...

My condolences to the Scott family. He has gone home with a wonderful report and respect from many.

Friends and members of the Scott family, particularly dearest Jessie Rae,
Your husband, the reigning icon of an extraordinary political family has passed, yet as one of the grandchildren eulogized today, may we focus on the 'open window' of deeds which Gov. Bob embraced to share and honor his public service.
My core memory is the appreciation my father, J. Talbot Capps held for Gov. Scott. Hosting him in our Lenoir Co. home several times during his last run for governor and...
