Robert Worth Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 21, 2018.
Robert Preston Worth died peacefully on February 21, 2018 at Well-Spring Retirement Community, Greensboro, North Carolina. He was born on April 3, 1950 to Anne Preston Worth and Alexander McAlister Worth, Jr. at Moses Cone Hospital. He graduated in 1968 from Page High School, and entered the University of North Carolina. After joining the National Guard, completing basic training, and completing his military assignments, Robert graduated from UNC in 1972.

Following graduation from law school at UNC, Robert practiced law independently for two years until he became an Assistant District Attorney under Ray Alexander in 1978. In 1981, Robert joined the law firm of Spence, Harrison, Benson, Worth and Wannamaker until 1985 when he joined the family business, Shamrock Corporation.

Robert became Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer for Shamrock, a leading supplier of printed and converted wrapping papers for the retail packaging, poultry, and cigarette industries, all while continuing his affiliation "Of Counsel" with the law firm of Douglas, Ravenel, Hardy, Crihfield & Hoyle. In 2001, he was admitted to practice before the highest court in the nation, the United States Supreme Court.

Robert managed the legal and financial affairs of Shamrock Corporation and related businesses. He especially loved working at Shamrock Specialty Papers. A business associate recently remarked that "Robert was a kind, gracious, generous man with a great sense of humor and a big laugh. He made a huge impact on everyone he met, both at our company LeBleu, as well as throughout the Greensboro business community."

He served on the local advisory board of BB&T for many years, and was active in numerous community and charitable organizations such as the PTAs at his children schools. Robert was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church since 1980. He enjoyed the sermons of all five Priests and family activities available through the Church.

Robert shared his warm, happy and generous spirit with all people, from all walks of life and all ages and personalities. He so easily noticed the best in others and brought it out through conversation.
Robert related to others with authentic attention and focus and helped others to feel confident about themselves. He was talented in art, making all of his children's birthday cards well into their adulthood. He loved walks on the beach to find sand dollars and whenever he found them he thought they were sent by a loved one. Robert, Ellen and all the children and grandchildren met many times a year at a family beach house built about 1981 by Robert's father. He lived with consistent, strong and grateful Faith all of his life and reflected a warm Spirit in his workday and in his home life always.

Robert was predeceased by his mother, Anne Preston Worth in 1990 and his father, Alexander McAlister Worth, Jr. in 2013.

Surviving family include his beloved wife, Ellen Alsup Worth and three children, son David Alsup Worth, wife Erica Gooden Worth and three children Elsa Anne (11), Fitzsimmons (8) and Percy (6); daughter Martha Worth Whelan, husband Robert William Whelan and children Carolyn Preston Whelan (7) and Robert Worth Whelan (6); son Jonathan McRae Worth, wife Catherine Collins Worth (Charlie).

Other surviving family members include his twin brother David McAlister Worth, wife Lauren Jones Worth and sons Alexander Worth III, wife Tess Stakias Worth, and Marshall Bouldin Worth and wife

Valerie Brock Worth and two sons Mason Worth (3) and David Harrison Worth (1 in May). His older brother is Alexander Walker Worth, wife Drena Worth and two sons, William Andre Worth and Thibault Alexander Worth and wife Zing Jao and daughter Isadora Worth (3). Robert's great uncle Robert Preston of Durham survives him as well as his sister-in-law Fabienne Andre Worth of Durham, mother of William and Thibault Worth. He has a step-brother and sister-in-law in Morganton, NC, Stanley Oakley and Sara Lynn Oakley. Stanley's mother, Margaret, was married for 21 years to Robert's father Alexander McAlister Worth, Jr.

Also surviving Robert are beloved relatives from his wife Ellen's family. These include Robert Martin Alsup, wife Jean Enderle Alsup, son John McRae Alsup (Jack), wife Maria Toro Alsup and daughter Enderle Maria Alsup (2), and son Benjamin Enderle Alsup, wife Bridget Webb Alsup and children Liam Alsup (3) and (daughter) Ryan (1) of Seattle, Washington. Two surviving cousins on the Worth side include Beverly LaLiberte and Marty Brown. Robert's brother-in-law and sister-in-law William B. Alsup, III and wife Sunny Jung Alsup live in Washington D.C. and Bill's daughter Kimberly Ellen Alsup McGriff, husband Bob McGriff and two children, Ella Grace McGriff (14) and William McGriff (9), all of San Diego, CA.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Following the Service, a short Inurnment Service will be in the church front yard. Following this, a Reception for all attending the Service will be in the Haywood Duke Room at Holy Trinity. The Visitation will be at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home, 515 N. Elm St, on Wednesday, February 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
