Sandra Fotinos Obituary

Fotinos, Sandra L.
Sandra L. Fotinos, age 71, passed away on October 3, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. Sandra (Sandy) was born on September 1, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, to Mary and Harold Smith. Sandy moved to Phoenix, Arizona in the 8th grade in February of 1959, with her parents and two brothers. Sandy attended West and Alhambra High Schools and Phoenix College. In 1964, while at Phoenix College, she met Tony Fotinos, and they began dating. They were homecoming king and queen at Phoenix College in 1965. They were then married on July 9, 1966. In her younger years, Sandy worked a variety of retail jobs and gave back to the community volunteering on the Foster Care Review Board, but Sandy's most treasured job was that of mother to her two daughters. Aside from Sandy's deep love of her family, she had many other passions and interests. Sandy was an avid collector of Native American art and jewelry and was very proud of her collection. Her interest in art led her to work at both the Phoenix Art Museum and the Scottsdale Center for the Arts after her daughters were grown. She enjoyed traveling to both Southern and Northern California and New Mexico to visit family and friends. She had a flair for fashion and loved to shop, including carefully selecting just the right gifts for birthdays and holidays. She also had an uncanny ability to remember details about friends and family and was often relied on by both to recount them. While Sandy is no longer with us physically and she will be missed beyond words, her love, beautiful smile, sense of humor, loyalty to family and friends, generosity and spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. We find comfort knowing she was greeted into heaven with joy by loved ones who passed before her. Sandy is preceded in death by her parents Harold E. Smith and Mary A. Smith. She is survived by her husband Tony and daughters Mary Ann and Jessica; her brothers Tim (Betsy) Smith and Matt (Mary) Smith; many nieces and nephews; and lots of dear friends. A Visitation and Rosary will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm with the Rosary at 7:00 pm on Sunday October 15, 2017, at A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuary, 710 W. Bethany Home Rd. Phoenix, AZ 85013. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, October 16, 2017, at S.s. Simon and Jude Cathedral, 6351 N. 27th Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85017. Interment will follow at Greenwood/Memory Lawn Cemetery. Donations can be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014 or St. Vincent de Paul, P.O. Box 13600, Phoenix, AZ 85002-3600.

Mom,

I have been thinking about you a lot lately. So many feelings and emotions. How I wish I could go back in time, and change things. What I would not give to have had more time with you. Yet, I am stuck in the reality that there is no going back in time. And that brings me immense pain. I thought as time passed things would get easier and the pain less intense, but I was wrong. If anything, the grief, sadness, loneliness and "what ifs" are more present and consuming. But why I am writing now and what I am hoping for is for you to give me a sign . . . a sign that I will be okay, a sign that you are watching over me, a sign that you see I am trying my best to do good things.

Mom,

I miss you more than ever today. To hear your laugh...to talk to you...to give you a hug. I’m struggling right now, and I need your guidance. So, send me a sign you are there.

Much love, your daughter Jessica

Mom,

I really miss you. Not a day has gone by that I have not thought of you, wished you were here with us and feel a sense of sadness that will not go away. I can only hope and pray that you are watching me from above and that I make you proud. Every day since you have left us, I have tried to be a better person, in even the smallest of ways. I have tired to be more kind, more understanding and more patient. I still do not understand why you had to leave us the way you did and the immense suffering you went through over those 3 months, and I probably never will. But know that I love you and am waiting to see you in my dreams. XOXO Jessica

Dear Tony, Mary Ann and Jessica,
Charlie and I were overseas when we were informed of Sandy's passing. We are shocked and filled with sorrow for you all and your whole family. Sadly, we had lost touch over the years but that never meant that we did not think of you often. I fondly remember the many hours that Sandy and I would spend together with our young children and laugh and talk. It made being mothers of young kids so much more fun. I always treasured that friendship. Sandy was a classy lady. I am sorry she is gone. We wish you peace.
