William V. "Bill" DeFlavio, 95
WORCESTER - Bill DeFlavio, a life-long resident of Worcester, passed away June 20, 2013 at the age of 95, surrounded by his loving family at the VA Hospital in W. Roxbury, MA. He was the son of deceased David and Congetta DeFlavio. He is survived by his beloved wife Lucy (Cangello) of 66 beautiful years. Devoted and loving father to David and wife Mary, William, Robert, Paul and wife Sheri. Brother to deceased sisters Dora and Helen; brothers Jim & Arthur and survived by Ethel. He is also survived by 8 beautiful grandchildren, Karine, Michelle, Ryan, Jeff, Ben, William V., Nate and Lucy and 3 great grandchildren, Hayden, Addyson and Kellen, and several nephews and nieces. Bill was a 1st Lieutenant and served 5 years in the Army during WWII and was Company Commander in the 830th Engineer Aviation Battalion. He was part of major campaigns in Europe including the Normandy Invasion at Omaha Beach, Northern France and Rhineland Germany. Bill graduated from Commerce High, Worcester Jr. College and the US. Army's Engineer's School of Construction and Tactics. After service to his country, he was a Building Inspector for the City of Worcester for 14 years and State District Supervisor for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Dept. of Public Safety for 18 years. He was a Registered Professional Engineer for 54 years.
Bill was an avid golfer and swimmer but most of all enjoyed being with his family. Bill loved attending his four sons sporting events. He was a member of East Side Post #201 American Legion, and the Wachusett Country Club, and Green Hill Golf Association.
Bill's funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 25, from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00AM in the Church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel-St Ann, 24 Mulberry St. Calling hours will be Monday from 4:00PM to 7:00PM in the funeral home. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery. Members of the East Side Post will gather at 7:00PM to perform their ritual.
Donations in his memory can be made to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Building Fund, 28 Mulberry St., Worcester, MA 01605 and the Fisher House Boston, PO Box 230, S. Walpole, MA 02071. His family would like to thank the dedicated people of the Fisher House and the VA Hospital in W. Roxbury who serve veterans and military families.
