Obituary

The family of William Robert Moffat sorrowfully announces his peaceful passing on October 28, 2003 at the Portage district General Hospital. Respecting Dad’s wishes there will be a private family service and internment of the ashes at Hillside Cemetery.

Robert was born on September 17, 1917 at Rossendale, Manitoba, the son of William and Violet Moffat, who predeceased him. He was raised on the family farm and attended school in Rossendale, and then went to University of Manitoba Agricultural college where he received his diploma. He returned to the family farm where he farmed with his father until his marriage to Freda Dawn Vigar on June 18, 1949. His parents retired to Portage la Prairie and Rob & Freda took over the operation of the family farm. They lived on the family farm until they retired to Portage la Prairie in April of 1996.

From a young age his love of horses was shown by his using them for working the farm and transportation to social functions in the early years to giving sleigh rides and pony rides in later years. There was always a pet horse on the farm. His family will always remember the fun times shared, including his love of music and dancing. Family and friends will all remember the happy times spent playing cards. Rob was an avid curler for many years. During his retirement he enjoyed the coffee and conversation at the “Senators’ Table” at the Co-op and the activity of the Monday night auction sales.

Taking an active role in community affairs was a priority. He was involved with the School Board, the 4-H Club, the Community Club, Curling Club, Belles & Beaus Seniors Club and the Oddfellows Lodge. He was actively involved with the Rossendale United Church and served as Chairman of the Board and as an official Trustee.

He will be sadly missed by his son, Bill and Daughter-in-law, Fran and his daughter, Mary Lynn, who will always remember his loving and caring nature. He will also be mourned by his sister, Minnie McVety and in-laws, Harold Finnie, Marion Vigar, Clarence and Vera Sundell, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews. Robert was happy to welcome into the family his step-grandchildren, Glenn and Sandra Brown, and their daughters, Shannon and Shaina, Jim and JoAnn Brown, and Rick and Sandy Brown.

Robert was predeceased by his loving wife, Freda Dawn on July 17, 2003, an infant daughter, his sisters, Ann Finnie and Ethel McVety and his brothers-in law, Stan McVety, Wes McVety and Bob Vigar.

In lieu of flowers if friends so desire donations may be made in Robert’s memory to the Rossendale United Church, Box 100, Rossendale, MB., R0H 1C0 or the Portage District General Hospital Foundation, 524 Fifth Street S.E., Portage la Prairie, MB., R1N 3A8
