Eugene Schmidt Naples, FL
Eugene Schmidt passed away June 27, 2012.
He was born on Octo ber 17, 1928 in Minneapolis, MN. As a young boy he would ride his bicycle to the Minneapolis Airport to watch airplanes - his passion. He was hired by Northwest Airlines in an apprentice mechanics position. He received the FAA approved aircraft and engine licenses. When he had an extra dollar, he would buy a flying lesson. In 1951 he relocated to Tokyo, Japan to work on the Korean Airlift for which Northwest Airlines had a contract. A deferment from his draft board had issued him this duty, which concluded in 1953. He was then drafted into the US Army, stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. In August of 1954, he was married to Jane Bishop, a radio operator for Northwest Airlines whom he had met at LaGuardia Airport. After his two year military commitment they returned to NY where he studied and received his Flight Engineer Certificates. In 1957 they relocated to Minneapolis. He went on to get his pilot's license and flew as a Captain on the Electra, Boeing 707, 727, & 747 internationally. In 1970 he trained and flew with Canadian pilots on the Electra to the oil drilling rigs in the Arctic.
After retiring, Gene became active at the Naples Airport. He was on the Airport Authority from 1990 to 1994. His one goal was to build a new control tower, which was done. In 1998 he served on the Board of the Collier County Airports and was interim Executive Director for two years. He served on the Orleans Condo Board for 25 years, was President/Chairman of Presidents Council; President of Harbour Drive; Gulf Shore Boulevard Association; FAA Aviation Safety Councilor; Naples Airport Noise Compatibility Committee; member of Quiet Birdmen; and President of Naples Flying Club.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jane Schmidt; son, Brad Schmidt and daughter in law Kathy; as well as granddaughter, Brecklyn; his sister, Cathleen Buechele and her husband, Kenneth; sister, Mary Schmidt; and sister, Margaret DeMarco and her husband, John.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Schmidt; and father, Michael Schmidt.

Jane & Family
Gene was a "Class Act and one of my mentors. We also were "buddies" as you put it, because both of us had the good fortune to fly the B-747 and always had a lot of "war" stories.
He encouraged me to become a member of the Naples Flying Club with him and together we had several long cross country flights to Immokalee and Marco Island, without even getting lost.
At our last QB meeting, we had a special toast for Gene. At the memorial service, the QB's will be represented in force.
I am very honored and humbled to have been asked to release the ashes over the Gulf with Joe Bawduniak.
Godspeeed "Good Buddy", may you have a tailwind, ceilings and visibilty unlimited.

I thoroughly enjoyed conversing with Gene on projects and then working with him to implement them like the creation of the Lorenzo Aviation program and the Collier County Airport Authority system of airports. He will be missed but his finger prints will remain forever on South Florida's aviation system.......

My thoughts and prayers to the entire family. The word gentleman pretty much sums up the discription of Gene. I enjoyed working with him for many years. Wishing Gene a smooth flight west.

Dear Jane, we at Lorenzo Walker are so saddened by this news. We all loved Gene and his many stories! I never saw him without a huge smile on his face! He is the reason we have an aviation program. His love of all things having to do with airplanes will live on because of his passion and willingness to give of himself! What a great man! One of a kind! He will be very deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Although I never had the chance to fly with Gene I always enjoyed running into him somewhere, sometime, someplace. On a layover or in the training department. He always seemed to have a warm smile on his face and was glad to see everyone.
I bet God smiled when Gene waklked into Heaven !

Gene was a first class gentleman. He flew a particularly notable flight with me during an event I described in a book I wrote.
I considered it a deeply humbling honor that he wanted to participate and his presence made the occasion even more unforgettable.
He always had a special place in my heart and I'm sad that he's left us. I send my thoughts, prayers, and warm wishes to Jane, his children, and everyone else close to him.
Godspeed, Gene...and Blue skies,

Dear Jane; I was so sorry to read about your husband.... I can kick myself hard. I lived in Naples for many years We moved to Naples in 1971. all three of my daughters graduated from Naples High School. Duncan e-mailed me several years ago and suggested I look you up and meet Eugene and you and go to lunch or something .Well I didn't know your last name and rode by your complex a few times but didn't really try. I had a stroke following a boat accident in 1985 that left me comp;etly paralyzed on my left side and mobility was and is very difficult.. Anyway reading the obit I wished I had met yout husband. My wife, Barbara passed away two years ago and we were married 59 years. It was really tough .but she had C.P.O.D. and suffered terribly for 10 years. We moved to Fort Mill. S.C. in 2010 to live with one of our two daughters that lived here.... Family is a must when we lose a loved one and I read that you have that....May God Bless you and take some of the pain away. It's very consoling to know that someday we'll see our loved ones again .Take care.. Carl Bailey
