Reverend Gordon Baker Obituary

Published by North County Times on Jul. 17, 2011.

The Reverend Gordon Jefferson Baker, 95 04/23/1916 ~ 07/02/2011 CARLSBAD -- Gordon was born on Easter Sunday, April 23, 1916, in Los Angeles. He met his future wife Betty Smith, when they were elected as regional church youth group officers (president and secretary, respectively). Gordon and Betty were married on August 28, 1940, and continued their partnership of church and community service. A graduate of UCLA and Chicago Theological Seminary, Gordon was ordained as a Congregational minister in 1943 and served four churches (Colonial Congregational Church in Los Angeles, Union Congregational Church in Shafter, First Congregational Church in Buena Park and Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Carlsbad), and completed eight building programs, before retiring in 1981. He continued as Pastor Emeritus at Pilgrim UCC in Carlsbad, and kept a full schedule of travel, community and church activities for another 30 years. Among the achievements of which he was most proud were his leadership with the Carlsbad Housing Advisory Board in the 1960s and the development of low- income housing in the "barrio" area. He also proudly supported Betty as "Mr. Betty Baker" when she established the Carlsbad Literacy Center at Pilgrim UCC in 1971. He served as director of the Center from 1993 to May 2011. He was honored with numerous awards for his community service: Dove Award by the Arc of San Diego North County (2002), Carlsbad Citizen of the Year (2004), Legacy Award by Laubach Literacy Council of San Diego (2006), and Carlsbad Library Foundation Award for literacy work (2008). Gordon was a faithful member of Rotary, with perfect attendance for over 50 years, and traveled with a Rotary group to Ecuador in 2008 at the age of 92. Gordon was predeceased by his parents, Earle and Ruby Baker; wife, Betty; and grandson, Daniel Riley. He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Ronald Baker (Judy Eberhart), Margaret Baker (Francis Riley), Kathryn Tell (Darryl Tell); five grandchildren, (Kimberly Johnson, Joseph Baker, Jacob Tell, Sarah Tell, and Alicia Riley); and five great-grandchildren. Also foreign exchange student daughters, Tonie Lamsin Brucelas and Monica Andujar Rojas and their families are part of Gordon's extended family. He is also survived by his three siblings, Donald Baker of San Francisco, Phyllis Noel of Hemet, Kenneth Baker of La Verne, and Betty's only brother James Smith of Pasadena, and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life is planned for July 30, at 2 p.m., at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 2020 Chestnut, Carlsbad, Calif. 92008. Memorial contributions may be sent in Gordon's name to: ProLiteracy, 1320 Jamesville Ave., Syracuse, NY 13210, and Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 2020 Chestnut, Carlsbad, Calif. 92008. Rev. Baker performed our wedding in 1991. We were not members at the church where he pastored, or any church.
My wife was from L.A. and I was in the service stationed near by. My wife , then fiancé , found Rev Baker searching for a minister to perform our wedding. She was raised Catholic and I was raised in a Jewish congregation but did not have faith in God at that time. Rev Baker agreed to marry us with the condition we allowed him to counsel with us several times before the wedding.

On the day of the wedding Rev. Baker was ill and came directly from the E.R. to perform the wedding apologizing several times for being late. We were grateful that he still was able and felt bad that he had to perform the wedding ill. He seemed more concerned about us and being a few minutes late. Through out all our times with him he reflected the same character of love, patience, and sincerity. I have no doubt that within all his prayers for us as a couple and individually, that he prayed for me to have an experience leading to faith and salvation. In September of 1998 I came to faith in Yeshua Messiah, my wife and I together dedicating our lives to Him. We live in Tennessee with our three sons, also believers. I am convinced Rev.Baker's witness and prayers are directly connected to my salvation encounter, successful marriage, and family.
I'm looking forward to seeing him again one day so I can thank him in person and we can worship our God and Savior together.

I'm sharing this in hope that it brings great joy to his family, friends, and congregation and great praise to God!

Respectfully,

Dave F.

As a teacher Gordon Baker shared a patient loving path for all of us to follow. His years as a servent of God showed all of us whether we were a parishener or community member to share a fellowship, inspired by the almighty is the true path to follow in our daily lives. My brief time with Gordon was shared by Rotary projects over many years of service to our community. Many lives have benefited through fellowship with Gordon, and many of us will continue his beliefs and efforts to provide our fellow man with a life of love and generous co-existence, to live in a better world than we had arrived. Thank you Lord for giving us Gordon Barker, and thank you for the gifts he shared with us, a life we now our challenged to extend to others.

Love from Kim and Syd.

Thank you for cheering me through my Chemo and being my walking buddy and showing me what a wonderful place this world is with so many fascinating people to meet and places to see and people to help. Each Day is precious and each encounter magical. I know you are getting and giving lots of your famous hugs in heaven.
