Velma Brewer South, age 97, of Selma, passed away Monday, April 18th.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Gene South, her parents, Henry Clay "Jake" and Millie Brewer of New Albany, Mississippi, brothers Van Brewer, Billy Brewer, and Mason Brewer, and sister Pauline Brewer Wiseman.

She is survived by her sister Mable Brewer Erwin of New Albany Mississippi, her three sons and their wives Gene and Stephanie South Jr of McKinney Texas, Ronnie and Patty South of Selma, and Steve and Susan South, also of Selma.

Mrs. South also left behind seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. South was born March 22, 1919 in New Albany, MS. She and her family resided in Greensboro and Selma Alabama for several years, where she and her husband Gene South Sr. was employed by Hills Grocery, Kwik-Chek, and later Winn-Dixie.

Mrs. South was a devoted mother, wife, Grandmother, and Great-grandmother. She was an avid University of Alabama, Atlanta Braves, and Dallas Cowboys' sports fan and loved to garden and play golf. She was an animal lover all of her life. She was a member of Crescent Hill Presbyterian / New Covenant Church of Selma.

Special thanks to the loving care of Park Place Nursing and Rehab Center and Essie Pullom, caretaker, and also to Homestead Hospice Services.

Pall bearers will be composed of her family members.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at New Live Oak Cemetery in Selma, with Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing. The Dr. Cecil Williamson will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers please consider making a memorial gift to The Selma Animal Shelter or Homestead Hospice Services.
