Doris Stewart Obituary

Doris Stewart

GRANVILLE: A funeral service celebrating the life of Doris Jessie Perry Stewart, 92, of Granville, will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 102 E. Broadway, Granville with Rev. Stephen J. Cramer as celebrant. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville.

Doris passed away June 27, 2014 at Kendal at Granville. She was born March 15, 1922 in North Fairfield, Ohio to Marjorie and Thayer Perry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. William Stewart, her son Mark Stewart and her brother Donald Perry.

Doris graduated from North Fairfield High School first in her class then attended Ohio University graduating cum laude in 1943. She began her teaching career at Norwalk City Schools in 1943.

She met and married a young Methodist Minister in 1945 who was to become her partner as they explored the worlds of literature, music and travel together. During their time together they raised three sons and Doris resumed her teaching career as they moved through a succession of church appointments in Ohio including the communities of Granville, Bellefontaine, Van Wert and Cincinnati.

Following Bill's retirement the couple returned to Granville to enjoy the village's many offerings. Doris was very active in a number of community organizations including Fortnightly Travelers, Winter Picnic, Granville Music Club, Ohio Retired Teachers, United Methodist Women-Tulip Circle and continued her 50 year involvement with PEO.

Doris also became an accomplished cook. Her husband would challenge her with recipes from the New York Times and she would tackle them undaunted by complexity of ingredients or execution, usually with success.

Both Doris and Bill enjoyed a wanderlust that never faded. Following her husband's passing Doris never lost her love for travel and particularly enjoyed her time on Lake Superior in the small Upper Peninsula town of Eagle Harbor, Michigan.

She is survived by son Jonathan and wife Kayla; son Eric and wife Gayle and daughter-in-law Sandra Stewart plus seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 P.M. at the McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home in Granville. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mcpeekhoekstra.com.

Memorial contributions may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, Organ Restoration Fund or PEO Chapter AB c/o Sally Stilwell, 403 W. Broadway, Granville, OH 43023.
