Ellen Judge Obituary

Ellen Graham Judge

NEWARK: A graveside service will be held at a later date for Ellen Graham Judge, 93, of Newark, formerly of Granville. She died peacefully on Monday, September 5, 2011, in the care of Hospice of Central Ohio in Newark.

Ellen was born December 2, 1917, in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Bernard D. and Zoa C. (Colville) Graham. She married the late John F. Judge on March 18, 1948, and was predeceased by him on May 18, 1969.

A 1935 graduate of Newark High School and Newark College of Commerce, Ellen was an intelligent professional in the workplace who accomplished tasks competently, modestly, and cheerfully. Prior to marriage, she was employed as a secretary at the Pure Oil Company, Eastern Division Production Office in Newark.

From 1961 to 1981, Ellen was the school secretary at Wilson School, Newark Public Schools. At retirement, her time at Wilson was commemorated light-heartedly as "The Ellen Judge Years", and a school employee award given annually was named after her in honor.

Ellen was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, The Monday Talks, and Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.), Hetuck Chapter. She was a loving, kind, wise, and caring wife, mother, and friend.

Surviving are her sons, Geoffrey Graham Judge (Margaret) of Newark, and Michael P. Judge (Juli) of Chino Hills, CA; grandsons, Graham Judge of Chicago, IL, Jason Judge (Kerry) of Omaha, NE, and Todd Judge (Christin) of Oro Valley, AZ; great-grandchildren, Adam and Kyle Judge of Omaha, NE, and Mackenzie and Madison Judge of Oro Valley, AZ; nieces and nephews, Robert K., James B., Mollie, and Linda Graham; grand-nephews, Timothy, Scott, Ryan, and Brian Graham.

In addition to her parents; and husband; she was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert and Richard Graham; and sister, Marian Graham; as well as nephew, Michael Graham.

At Ellen's request, there will be no viewing or calling hours. Arrangements are in the care of McPEEK-HOEKSTRA FUNERAL HOME in Granville. To ensure family receipt, please express all online condolences at www.mcpeekhoekstra.com.

Geoff: Sorry to hear about your loss. Mrs. Judge (old habits die hard and that's what I always referred to her as) was an outstanding secretary, and the same can be said about her as a mother, grandmother, and person. Geoff, you had two truly great parents. I remember the time I ate supper at your house in the 8th grade and your mom served up some sweet potatoes, which was something I didn't care for. I had told your parents earlier in the evening that I was in a scoring slump on the basketball court for the Wilson Tigers. Your mom and dad told me to eat the sweet potatoes and I would snap out of my slump the next game- guaranteed. I ate them and sure enough I went out the next game and scored 12 points (I know that was a drop in the bucket for John Snow but it was a lot for me). I later informed/thanked your parents and in typical John Judge fashion, your dad said, "I told you so". My condolences also go out to Margaret and Graham.

Mike,
Words seem an inadequate offering, but hopefully just knowing that people care will in some way comfort you in this time of grief; however, time alone has the power to dull the pain. You are in my prayers!

Dear Geoff, Margaret, and Graham,

I was so very sorry to read of your dear mother/grandmother's passing. What a wonderful woman....I sure she saved many a Wilson student from the principal's office or worse, a call home to the parents (a fact I can attest to). May you know her peace.
Fondly,
Mary Ann Grady
