Ernie was born November 11, 1924, in Honolulu, HI and lived a remarkable life which took him and his family around the world. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and later worked as an electrical engineer, supervising projects in various countries, including: Germany, Portugal, Morocco, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, Vietnam, Bougainville, Libya, Solomon Islands, and Wake Island.
Ernie is survived by his wife, Rosa Conner Nihoa; son, Michael Nihoa and wife, Rosalind, of Roper; daughters, Beatrice Nihoa-Walter of Stuttgart, Germany, Laura Stroud of New Bern, Shirley Osborne and husband, Tim, of Robersonville, Bonnie Nihoa of Jacksonville and Emily Nihoa Bagley and husband, Michael, of New Bern. He is also survived by his sisters, Venus Nihoa Epting of Charlotte, Edith Nihoa Keliikuli of Forest City, and Carol Nihoa; his 16 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Ernie's life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, at Pollock-Best Chapel with Arthur Conklin officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at their home.
