Pryor Gobble Obituary

Published by www.News-Herald.com from Jul. 7 to Jul. 8, 2012.
Army Cpl. Pryor Gobble, 18, passed away Dec. 12, 1950, at Chosin Reservoir, Hungnam, North Korea.
Cpl. Gobble was born Aug. 14, 1932, in Jonesville, Va.
He received his basic training at Fort Knox, Ky., and then transferred to Seattle, Wash., Tokyo, and to Korea.
In late Nov. 1950, Cpl. Gobble and elements of the 31st Regimental Combat Team (RCT), known as "Task Force Faith", were advancing along the eastern bands of the Chosin Reservoir, in North Korea, when enemy forces encircled and overran the U.S. positions. Elements of the 31st RCT were successful in forcing a breakout and fighting a retreat south to the relative safety of the village of Hagaru-ri and eventually a further south to the port of Hungnam. Pryor, along with many other Americans, was listed as Missing in Action as a result of the heavy fighting. Regimental records compiled after the battle indicate that Cpl. Pryor Gobble was reported as Missing In Action in the vicinity of the Chosin Reservoir on, or about, 6-11 December 1950.
Between 1990 and 1994, North Korea gave the United States 208 boxes of remains believed to contain the remains of 200-400 U.S. servicemen. In 1994, the North Korean government turned over human remains they purported to be of American servicemen who died in the vicinity of the Chosin Reservoir. To identify the remains, scientists from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory used circumstantial evidence and forensic identification tools such as dental records and mitochondrial DNA - which matched Pryor's brother (Glenn Gobble) and sister (Ferne Yeary).
A beloved son and brother, he was survived by his parents, the late William and Hazel (Blankenship) Gobble; siblings, Bernice Yeary, Glenn (Lois) Gobble, and the late Bernard Gobble, Ferne Yeary and James Harold Gobble; late brothers-in-law, William Yeary and Rev. James Yeary; and sister-in-law, Barbara Gobble; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 11 at the McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center St. (Route 615, north of Route 2), Mentor. Cpl. Gobble's nephew, the Rev. Stefan J. Sawczak of the Chester Christian Assembly of God Church, will officiate.
Family will receive friends from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.
The family suggests donations in his name be made to the Chester Christian Assembly of God Church, 11815 Chillicothe Road, Chester Township, OH 44026.
