ALLISON SAVILLE Obituary

Dr. Allison Winthrop Saville, 84, left this world peacefully on March 10, 2011, surrounded by his loving family in his DeLand home. He was the devoted husband of his wife Grace for 51 years; and the caring father of Deborah Saville Clark of Lake Helen, FL; David Saville (Darcy) of White Plains, NY; Mark Saville (Renee) of Maitland, FL; and Joyce Dehn (Michael) of Rockledge, FL. He was the adoring grandfather of Sami Faires of DeLand, FL; Alexandra Clark of Lake Helen, FL; Luke, Zach, Isabel, and Charlotte Saville of White Plains, NY; Brittany and Mathew Saville of Maitland, FL; Ashley, Ryan, and Logan Dehn of Rockledge, FL; as well as the loving great-grandfather of Conor Godwin of DeLand, FL. Through his dedication, patience, and deep love, he made each feel as though they were his first and only concern. He is also survived by his brother, William "Buzzy" Thompson (CA), and numerous cousins and loved ones from Boston and Rockport, MA. Dr. Saville was born in New York, NY and divided his youth between the home of his beloved maternal grandparents in Rockport, MA, and the St. Thomas Choir School in the heart of New York City where he began his lifelong appreciation of classical music as a choirboy. His academic career included stops at the Williston School in Easthampton, MA; the University of Michigan (BA); Columbia University (MS), and the University of Washington (Seattle) where he completed his PhD in European history after serving his country in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Over the course of a distinguished 50-year career as an educator, Dr. Saville taught the importance and relevance of history, culture, and civilization to literally thousands of students at academic institutions such as the Lakeside School (WA), the US Naval Academy, Texas A&M, the University of Hawaii, and Vermont Academy. He was known to infuse his teaching with humor, wit, and personal experience, and concluded his career at the age of 80 as a professor at Daytona Beach Community College. Dr. Saville's journey as an historian provided him with numerous opportunities to pursue related interests outside the classroom, and he did so with great enthusiasm. Most notably he served as a Curator at the Smithsonian Institution, restored and sailed on the Gazela Primera during OpSail76, was Curator of the Philadelphia Maritime Museum, and worked with the Pearl Harbor Memorial Museum. Although his family mourns today, we know that he has been restored, and we look forward to the heavenly reunion secured by the victory that Jesus won for those who believe. A memorial service will be held Thursday March, 17 at 10:30 am at the Allen-Summerhill Chapel in DeLand. Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home, 126 E. New York Ave., DeLand is in charge of arrangements.

Uncle Billy was a special relative whose visits and calls brought joy to our family. He reminded us with his thoughtfulness and kindness how important family is. A box of Jelly donuts will forever remind me of him.

Uncle Billy! Truly an original. The source of fond and funny memories for so many. No doubt he is taking heaven by storm - and no doubt he showed up with a dozen jelly doughnuts and a big smile. Rest peacefully
