OWEN RICE Obituary

Owen L. Rice died on June 28, 2012 at the Hospice unit of the Daytona Beach Good Samaritan Society. He was 81. Owen was born in Queens, New York in 1931 as the son of Rose and Peter Rice, immigrants from County Down, Northern Ireland. During five years of service in the U.S. Air Force as an air traffic controller in Berlin, Germany, Owen married Irmgard L. Zollner, the love of his life. They have been married for 56 years. Afterward, Owen took a job as a police officer in the New York City Police Department, a twenty year career which spanned working as a street patrol officer, as a member of the communications division, and as a member of the special operations unit at NYPD headquarters. Finally, for the remaining twenty-four years of his career, Owen served as a display advertising account executive and as the display advertising administrative manager at the Daytona Beach News-Journal. After fielding the perfectly appropriate question, "What does a New York City cop know about advertising?" Owen became one of the News-Journal's top salespeople and a valued friend and manager. His twenty-four years at the News-Journal were filled with love and satisfaction. Owen is survived by his wife, Irmi; his two children: Monika Rice, a photographer in Santa Cruz, CA, and Stephen Rice, a university professor in Seattle, WA; his daughter-in-law, Karen C. Rice; and two grandsons. Per Owen's wishes, he was cremated and there will be no service. Condolences may be expressed at the Daytona Beach News Journal online obituary guest book.

You will be missed

July 23, 2012

It was with great sadness that the NE 10-13 Club just found out about Owen's passing. Owen was a friend and always helped the Club when we needed to know whom to contact at the Daytona Beach News Journal. Owen had a great sense of humor. One great quote that I still remember is: I'm recovering from a stroke and make too many memory errors. If anything good can be said about a stroke, it's that it is a good excuse for anything stupid that one says or does!!

Not only was Owen one the nicest people I have every meet, he was also one of the COOLEST. The man was LOVED by everyone that knew him. If it is possible Heaven is a better place because they have him and this world will now have a void that can never be filled. I look forward to hearing another one fo your stories someday.

I had the wonderful privilege of caring for Mr Owen Rice. He was such a wonderful sweet man. Making my job all worthwhile and rewarding. As he talked about his times spent on the NYPD , boy did he have some stories. He loved his family. Daily taking about his lovely wife and his boys. I miss Owen. I only wish we had forever. My deepest sympathy to Irmi. I pray I am as good a wife as you were. I also pray my husband loves me like Owen loved you.. I can still hear him calling for you in my mind. You both have touched my life more than you'll ever know. I am truly grateful to have been there.

I have very fond memories from childhood of you and Owen taking me to the beach, taking me to the Aladdin pool and restaurant, including my family during holidays, taking me to the park, and so many other things. The Rice family is a part of so many of my childhood memories. Know that my thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of pain. Owen was a great man who was kind-hearted, honorable, and loved by many.

Dearest Irmi, I always enjoyed sharing family times with you and Owen. When I shared the news about Owen with my family, Gene, James, and Kimberlee started talking about the time Steve and Karen took them to Daytona and what a great time they had with you two. My heart and prayers are with you. May your love and memories of Owen help you during this difficult time.

Fellow newspaperman, NYIT Graduate, and New Yorker. Going to miss his passion for doing the right thing as he was less concerned about doing things right ... a true leader and motivator with humor. Rest well!

We will miss our "Owen" and want to be sure his family knows our thoughts are with all of you. A handsome, kind, intelligent and witty man. I worked with Owen for 16 years and enjoyed his stories about the NYPD street beat. I along with co-worker/friends would play a joke on him now and then and he would turn around and gets us back with a loud round of laughter. He really cared about what he did at N-J and was so proud of his family. I have not worked at the N-J for several years but would see him and Irmi at Publix. Care to all of you.

What a great man! I waited on Owen and his wife for years in a restaurant I used to work at. I was very saddened to see he had passed away. My departure for the restaurant came unexpectedly, so I was not able to properly say goodbye to Mr. Rice. He and his wife are exceptional people. I will miss you Owen.

I was very sorry to hear of Owens passing. I worked with "O" for 11 years at The News Journal until his retirement in 2003. He was a great manager and a wonderful friend. He was always the voice of reason when things didn't make sense at work and you could always trust him. My thoughts and prayers go out to Irmi and family. We always looked for you two at Cracker Barrel. In reflecting back on my 16 year career with the Journal, my memories of Owen are the fondest. Truly a great man. To the Family of Owen Rice,
My husband and I got to know Mr. Rice during the last couple of months while he was at Good Samaritan. We do pet therapy there once a week with our dog, Pepper, and we would visit with him. He was always upbeat and we could tell that he had great love for and pride in his family. He was truly a wonderful guy and we will miss seeing him. We will keep him and the family in our prayers.

Sincerely,
Arlene & Fred North
