Nancy Gormley Obituary

Nancy Howes Gormley, of Palm Coast, died Thursday, July 6, at the Community Hospice Bailey Center in St. Augustine. She was 85. Born September 22nd, 1931, in Boston, Mrs. Gormley was one of the six children of Richard O. and Anna Haley Howes. After attending the University of Massachusetts, Mrs. Gormley went on to become one of the first women to attend Harvard Law School. She practiced law in New York City and western Pennsylvania for many years, and she held the position of General Counsel at Allegheny Power System, Inc. when she retired to St. Augustine and, later, Hammock Dunes in Palm Coast. Mrs. Gormley loved her family and loved animals, especially dogs. She was an enthusiastic and intrepid traveler, and loved to play bridge, poker, and Monopoly with a take-no-prisoners attitude. She was generous and kindhearted and always ready to listen and offer advice; she was also never afraid to express her own opinions, especially on politics. Mrs. Gormley was preceded in death by her husband, Martin E. Gormley, in 1966, and by her brother Richard Howes. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Bevilaqua, her grandson Alessandro Bevilaqua, and her grand-dog, Naima, as well as her siblings Thomas Howes, Beth Donnelly, Merry Ann Rucci, and Paul Howes. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Community Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation or to S.A.F.E. (Saving Animals From Euthanasia) in St. Augustine.
