Paul Busiek Obituary

Dr. Paul J. Busiek

Dr. Paul J. Busiek, son of Dr. U.J. and Erma Busiek, was born in Springfield, MO on April 1st, 1923 on April Fools Day and Easter Sunday. He went to his heavenly home on the morning of April 18th, 2016 at 8:20 am.

He was a life-long resident of Greene County and served his community in countless ways. Paul had three siblings, Angie, Kurt and Erwin. They grew up on Walnut Street with his father, the first pediatrician in Greene County and the surrounding area.

Paul attended Greenwood Laboratory School through high school. He graduated from Drury College and Washington University.

Paul was commissioned in the Army - Air Force and served his country in Student Medicine and was decorated with the Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on March 31st, 1949.

Paul returned home to Springfield and served the area as a pediatrician with his father for many years. He served as a pediatrician for thirty-nine years helping thousands of children and families. Paul championed the polio vaccination program for Southwest Missouri. Paul donated a half day each week for twenty-five years to the city clinic. A child could always bring a smile to his face up to the end of his life.

Paul was a Patriot. He loved his County and served as State Representative to District 140. He ran for office as a one issue candidate, the Equal Rights Amendment. He won his race, went to Jefferson City, and along with Senator Emery Melton defeated this law and came home. It took Paul Busiek two sessions in the legislature to defeat a bad law.

Paul was an avid reader. He helped author several books and wrote many articles under four different pen names. He studied forms of Governments and was noted as an expert in the dictatorship of Communism. He testified to Congress and the House Committee on Internal Security.

Paul was a member of many political and civic organizations and was awarded several honors, including "The Defenders of Freedom."

Paul Busiek was what is known as a good man. He was a gentleman, soft spoken, had a heart as big as the outdoors, and was a man of his word. He loved Big Band and Jazz, he loved to dance and was quite good at it. He loved the outdoors and nature. He spent many hours in the country clearing land with his children and friends. He put the "Busiek State Forest" together and named it in honor of his parents. It was a great joy to him when a person would tell him how much they enjoyed it.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. U.J. and Erma, and his brother, Kurt Busiek. He is survived by his wife, Mavis; sister, Angie Busiek Bennett; brother, Dr. Erwin Busiek; son, Allen Busiek and daughter-in-law Renee of Springfield; daughters Leigh Busiek Windbigler of Strafford, MO, Lauri Busiek Eaton and son-in-law Daryle of San Antonio, TX, and Elisabeth Busiek of New York City, NY; grandsons LT Robert Busiek, USN and Gray Windbigler; granddaughter, Midshipman Rachel Busiek, USN; three stepsons, David and Linda, Rick and Val, and James and Melinda Troxel; six step grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 22nd, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Maple Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 21st, from 5:30-7:00 pm, also at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pregnancy Care Center, 1342 E. Dr Paul was my pediatrician. I spent three years with an illness that we never figured out what it was. I would be fine then complain to my mom that I was tired. My fever would skyrocket and many times my life was in extreme danger. Mom would call and Dr Paul never failed to meet us at the hospital. I owe my life to God and Dr Paul.

I hope my message will be seen by the family, but doubt at this late date it will. I am so sorry to just be finding out so long after Dr. Busiek's passing.

My family and I know that Dr. Busiek likely saved my life almost 60 years ago. My momma would hold me for hours trying to help me stop crying in pain for my first year. Dr. Busiek would come to the house and take hold of me and I would settle down! Then, I clearly remember at 2 and 3 years old, he would call me Theodosia, give me a "begagement ring," and then stand by while the nurse gave me a shot so I wouldn't be mad at him.

I finally outgrew the problems that kept my parents up all night, supplied my with fine "diamond" engagement rings and, I prefer to think I was his only "Theodosia."

This wonderful man spent several years dropping everything to try to comfort me, and my mom and dear dad. Thank you Dr. Busiek. I am forever greatful.

Thinking of you Leigh, Gray and family; sending Prayers for comfort and peace.
My family and I have spent many wonderful times hiking and playing in the creek around Busiek Park. It has been a favorite destination for most of my life.
My Thanks to Dr Busiek for offering up such a beautiful place for others to enjoy; it is apparent that he was a unique person on earth and will be smiling on you all no doubt.

Sincerely, Suzy Ward, Strafford, MO

My husband, Eric and I, met Dr. Busiek in the mid 2000's when he requested that we look at a potential Cave on his property. A few members from our grotto had the honor of mapping the cave(s) for him. My husband drafted the map, aptly naming the caves after Paul. If the family would like a copy please contact us. Our very deepest condolences to the family of this humble individual who obviously held a high regard for our beautiful Ozarks.

Mavis and family sorry to hear of Paul's passing. Was a great asset to Springfield and the state of Missouri. I've been in your lovely home many time times for different kinds of meeting. Even owned for a number of years a desk (Gene Sooter owned it first) owned by Paul's dad at his doctors office. Not many left with Paul's stature...........

Doc was a friend and mentor and will be deeply missed. I remember fondly being summoned by Doc on multiple occasions to "finally" help him organize his vast library. As usual we would start in, collecting renegade books from all corners....then inevitably it would get quiet as we both found ourselves thumbing thru a book and predictably pausing to read it. Then after some time we both would look up at each other over the edge of a cover and just laugh...he would dip his head, look over his glasses and say, "Mark, I don't think we'll ever get done at this rate." Doc was right...after a dozen or so tries we never did but it was fun trying, but it was more fun just being with my good friend. RIP.

Dr. Paul was not only my pediatrician, but, my best childhood friend's father. I spent many happy hours at the Busiek household with Elisabeth. We would accompany Dr. Paul on errands and outings in his truck. I knew Dr. Paul to be a kind and gentle man. My parents often told me that he saved me from having significant hearing loss when he treated me for an ear infection that other doctors were not addressing effectively.

Rest in Peace Dr. Paul. You will always be part of my childhood memories.

Dr. Busiek was a great role model in so many ways, and he did it quietly and without fanfare as a great example of servant-leadership. He didn't just talk about things -- he did them. I will be out of town and unable to return in time to attend the funeral, so my heart and prayers will be with Mavis and the rest of the family, but I'm afraid that my body will not. You ran the good race and fought the good fight, Doc, and I'm looking forward to seeing you again in a place where time won't be an issue.

Dr Paul was such a wonderful and caring pediatrician. After having emergency surgery when I was six using ether, Dr Paul came to hold my hand when I went under two years later to have tonsils out. I was so scared but he was there to help me through it. I can still see him standing by my side over 55 years later. My condolences to his family and friends. I hope your hearts will soon smile as you remember the special times with him.Vicki Vienhage Meyer(Charley Vienhage's oldest daughter)
