THOMAS ALLEN Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 13, 2010.
Thomas J. Allen, 69, passed away Monday, August 9, 2010, at Hope Hospice of Cape Coral. Tom was born in Boston, MA, on Nov. 21, 1940, to John T. and Anita (Lampro) Allen, now deceased, and grew up in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He joined the Air Force in 1960, and served his tour of duty in Labrador. Upon discharge in 1964, he enrolled at the University of Maine, earning a BS degree in entomology and a Masters in wildlife management. For 32 years he served as a wildlife research biologist for the WV Div. of Natural Resources and became an expert in radio telemetry. Tom's lifelong passion for Lepidoptera led him to research, write and publish two popular field guides on butterflies. In 2003 he retired and relocated to Cape Coral, but remained active with many endeavors, including working with Florida Fish & Wildlife on the burrowing owl study, teaching at Edison College and writing a regular column for Birds & Blooms magazine. Tom was a nationally recognized wildlife artist, a gifted photographer, an avid native plant gardener and beekeeper, and a fossil hunter and collector. He was a dedicated conservationist who loved to share his knowledge, speaking to diverse groups in many venues.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Sandy; three daughters, Rebecca J. Allen of Chapel Hill, NC, Elizabeth J. (Glynn) Capell of Bluffton, SC, Jennifer L. (Kenneth) Collins of Pendleton, SC.; a son, Thomas J. (Ellamae) Allen of Seattle, WA; a stepdaughter, Erin E. Guyer of Atlanta, GA; ten grandchildren, two brothers, twin James E. (Ann) of N. Attleboro, MA, and Steve of Carmel, ME; a sister, Nancy L. of West Bend, WI; and a nephew and several nieces.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 14, at 2:30 p.m., in the chapel of Coral Ridge Funeral Home, 1630 S.W. Pine Island Rd., Cape Coral. Interment will be at a later date in Pinelawn Memorial Park, Southern Pines, NC.
Contributions in Tom's memory may be made to Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife, P.O. Box 152761, Cape Coral, FL 33915, or to Hope Hospice of Cape Coral.

Dear Sandy, I just heard about Tom today. I am so sorry I didn't know about his passing or I would have been there. I will always remember Tom with fond memories and for his beautiful paintings and soapstones. We will truly miss him. Again you are in our thoughts and prayers. Linda Wildman

Sandy,
Tom and Jim were in my class at Amherst Regional High School,1960, in Amherst, Mass. My maiden name was Allen, but as far as I know we were not related. He and Jim always had big smiles and were very friendly. I'm happy that he did so well in life, and that he loved nature and life. I and my family loved nature also. God Bless all of you as you learn to live without Tom.

Thank You Tom

Stella

Sandy, I can not imagine the family's sorrow at Tom's passing. He was such a unique person, his love of God's creation shining thru even in his illness. I will always remember him and tell others of his labors to sustain beauty in this world. I wish I could tell him I had five Monarchs in my garden this afternoon
I will hold you in my prayers.

Tom and I were friends in Barrington, I guess it must have been late elementary or early Jr High, not sure exactly when, but I do remember him yelling at me once to be my own man when I caved in to "the crowd" on something on the playground at L.R. Peck School. Obviously, I never forgot it. He was a great guy and certainly had a sense of being his own person at quite a young age. My sympathies to his family. What an interesting, fullfilling life he must have had.

Tom was really a renaissance man. He was a painter, wood carver, and photographer as well as a biologist, naturalist, professor, and rescuer (of animals and people), who combined perfectly his left with his right brain, but also his hands with his heart. See you around, Tom, in the butterflies and all wildlife that surround us. Also, in the job we have to continue as part of your legacy. Alessia Leathers
