John Woodell Obituary

John Norris Woodell Jr.

John Norris Woodell Jr., 83, of Lynchburg Avenue, Brookneal, passed away Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Peggy Rose Anderson Woodell.

Mr. Woodell was born in Fayetteville, N.C., on

Oct. 24, 1926, a son of the late John Norris Woodell Sr. and Mary Wilton Woodell. He graduated from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he played football. He served in the U.S. Navy during

World War II and was a retired Lt. Colonel from the U.S. Air Force, where he served in the Strategic Air Command during the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam. He was a member of Staunton River Masonic Lodge #155.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Trudy W. Elder (Howard), of Brookneal, and Joni W. Hamlett (Steve), of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, Danielle M. Shutt, of Spokane, Wash., Sarah R. Shutt, of New York, N.Y., Sam H. Shutt, of Brookneal, and Jon W. Hamlett (Bryn) and William E. Hamlett, of Lynchburg; and one great-grandson, Colton Elliott Hamlett.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, at Brookneal Baptist Church, by the Rev. Douglas Saunders, with interment to follow in Wickliffe Cemetery, with Air Force military honors at the grave.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to

7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at Henderson Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Brookneal, and at other times at the residence.

Memorial contributions may be made to City Year New York, 20 West

22nd St., 3rd floor, New York, NY 10010.
