John Slaughter Obituary

John Devereaux (Buddy) Slaughter

John Devereaux (Buddy) Slaughter, 75, of Tye River Community, Amherst, for 55 years, met his Lord and savior face to face on Sunday morning, Sept. 19, 2010.

Born March 29, 1935, at Rosemill, Amherst County, a son of the late Devereaux C. Slaughter and Scottie Lee Staples Slaughter.

Buddy was a loving husband, father and grandfather. A dedicated, faithful and loyal member of St. Stephen's Baptist Church at Tye River, where he served as a Deacon and had a deep love for his church as well as the church family. He was a retired superintendent from George E. Jones and Son with more than 20 years of service, an avid heavy equipment operator and outdoorsman who loved not only his work, but also life in general.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Patty L. Fortune Slaughter; a daughter, Roxanne Slaughter (Sharon Adcock), of Tye River; a son, James D. (Jimmy) Slaughter (Vicky), of Tye River; three grandsons, Brian Slaughter, Kevin Bridges and Ryan Adcock; one granddaughter, Erin Adcock; and a special friend of the family, Elizabeth Slaughter. Also, his favorite pets, Maggie, Annie and Amy.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, at St. Stephen's Baptist Church Cemetery at Tye River, with the Rev. Mickey Ryann, the Rev. Earl Clarkson and the Rev. Jake Stewart officiating. Even though John is being interred, we know he is already in the hands of his lord, Jesus Christ.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 6 p.m. today, Sept. 21, 2010, and the family will receive friends other times at the family residence at Tye River.

The family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to St. Stephen's Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 197 Tye River Depot Lane, Arrington, VA 22922.

Arrangements by Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston, (434) 263-4097.
