My dad died last year. My heart goes out to you, Linda and Scott.
When I arrived at Liberty in 1999 my office was one hallway down from Homers office. I had occasion to ask him for help on a graduate research paper. He offered a copy of the book that I needed with illustrations of the revolutionary war battle of the Brandywine by N. C. Wyeth. I followed him to his office, which was a maze of books. To my surprise within a few minutes he produced the book I needed.
I will always remember Homer's smiling face even in times of difficulty in his mobility for the last few years. What an inspiration to us all.
God bless you both.

It was such a great privilege to get to know Homer over the last few years. He was a brilliant scholar and a genuinely good man. We were so gratified that our son was able to take him last fall, which turned out to be Homer's final term at LU. We know he endured a number of health difficulties at the end, and it's comforting to know that his suffering is over. The loss is ours, not his. We look forward to seeing him again, and in the meantime, his wife and son are in our prayers.

Thanks for everything, Dr. Blass, and family too. From second grade Sunday school to honors history courses, great memories. Some of my favorite and most memorable undergrad research were those challenging papers! I will be looking for some good books to read in your memory.

We'll surely miss Homer - he was one of a kind! It was a privilege to have known him since you all moved to Lynchburg and got involved with Faith Bible Class. His Godly life and all these comments speak to his dedication to Jesus Christ; so adieu Homer - we'll all be there soon!

The thing that made Dr. Blass so interesting was his keen curiosity about life. His interests were as wide ranging as his library. I will miss his friendly greetings and infectious laugh. May God grant his family peace and grace.

It makes me smile to think of Dr. Blass entering Heaven. I can imagine his delight in meeting those historical figures that he was so interested in knowing. My son-in-law, Aaron Horton was so influenced by Dr. Blass and shared his passion for history. Aaron and my daughter, Rachael (both, LU 07) died in 2011 and I think Aaron especially was delighted to see his mentor and friend, Dr.Blass, and to take him to meet some of those great men and women that they both cared about so much. It was a happy day in Heaven, I am sure, but we on campus will miss him.

Dr. Blass was a wonderful professor and great example of how to live out one's faith. I truly enjoyed being a student of his, and was awed -- and somewhat envious! -- of his remarkable personal library. It is not every professor who has his own stacks in his office! It is such a comfort to know that we will meet again someday. My prayers are with the family at this time.

I recall Homer best as he walked (sometimes with difficulty) to his class, office, or some meeting at Liberty University where he taught for decades. He always returned my greeting with a smile and often a comment or two about history, literature, or current events. What an example of perseverance. We should all be as diligent to make the contribution God has given us to make.

Linda, it was a privilege to have a part in your wedding and to visit with you and Homer and Scott when we had the opportunity. You shared many happy years together. Homer's wealth of information, especially relating to history was remarkable. I'm sure the days/weeks/years ahead will be difficult, but God will continue to lead and to provide strength and peace.

He was such a lovely, humble Christian and uncomplaining servant. I remember how he gave his precious time to help with our literary magazine then called the Lamplighter. And he came to all of our Civil War Seminars. Most of all I will never forget his sweet smile even when he hobbled about with his cane. I can just see him now with Jesus, beaming from ear to ear. Well done, Homer. You were a good and faithful servant and a colleague who will be missed.

Homer brought history to life. I could sit and listen to him for hours. I am reading a book called " Going Downtown," A book about Viet Nam. I know he would want to know that. Homer always asked me what I was reading. I miss him already. Thomas Case, (L. U. Maintenance)

Homer was a dear friend and colleague.
It was an honor and privilege to know him. I will always remember his fondness for speaking on the Battle of Agincourt. The following quote from Shakespeare describes our love for teaching and our friendship aptly:
“We few, we happy few, we band of brothers.”
King Henry V. Act iv. Sc. 3.

Dr. Blass' lectures will always remain one of my fondest memories of college. No one better modeled a sincere love of history better than him. Ten years into my teaching career, I still find myself sharing some of his favorite anecdotes with my students. My hope is that I can express as genuine a love for the lessons of mankind's experience for my students as he did for me. May God bless the soul of Dr. Homer Blass.

Homer was one of the first persons we met in Bolivar when we moved there from Austin. He gave us a good introduction to the campus and the school! He was also in a SS class Hugh taught at one point, and I enjoyed the socializing that bunch did, which helped me know him better. His book collection was absolutely astounding, but not as amazing as his love for them and for their content. He must be reveling in the heavenly library these days! Prayers go out to Linda and Scott as they enter this new chapter of their lives.

Homer had an infectious love for the little known details of history, and nothing seemed to make him happier than finding a book on a subject or sharing a personal anecdote on a subject of mutual interest. If you were interested in a topic, so was Homer. There was no one else like him.

Homer's walk matched his talk. He was the real deal. I loved the conversations we had about history as colleagues, and I loved the way he treated my kids at TRBC on Sunday mornings. Our family will remember him fondly, and we pray for his family during this difficult time.

Dr. Homer Blass was one of the most amazing people whom I have ever had opportunity to know. He was kind, loving, humble, yet unrivaled in the wealth of his knowledge. It was a blessing to have had him as an undergraduate professor, and he has been a role model to me in the two decades since,as I taught high school history and then college history. In a forthcoming book, long before I knew that he was ill, I wrote of Dr. Blass in its acknowledgements section. I regret that he will not see that book this side of eternity, but I think he knew how much we, his students, love him. I miss this wonderful man!
