Theodore Kermit Scott Jr., 71, of Monroe, died Monday, May 26, 2008. He was the husband of Aadron Scott for over 50 years.

He is survived by his son, David Scott, of Amherst, and his daughters, Aadron Rausch, of Lafayette, Ind., and Tracey Scott and husband, Ricardo, of Harvard, Ill. He is also survived by his sister, Martha Jean Aldridge, of Seattle, Wash.; and three grandchildren, Jeanine McGill, Danielle Scott and Michael Scott.

Kermit was born Oct. 18, 1936, in Pontotoc, Miss., and grew up in Leland, Miss. He attended Millsaps College, studied on scholarship in Germany, and received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Columbia University. He taught philosophy at Yale University and then at Purdue University for 36 years. In 1993 he earned his master's degree in social work and started his second career as a counselor. Throughout his life, he and his wife served their community, serving as citizen advocates, founding the Welfare Rights Organization, and founding the Food Bank of Lafayette, Ind.

Aadron,

Bob and I are completely heartbroken to learn of Kermit's death. We are so sorry for you and your family and wish strength and peace for all of you.

You both made such an impact on our lives (and countless others!!) and we have missed you so much since you left W. Laf. We are just so sorry that we didn't keep in touch with you more.

Kermit was an amazing person and had such a gift for what he did. We have always looked up to both of you and are so blessed to have known you.

God Bless you and please know that you have our love, thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time and always.

(I sent you an email, but I don't know if we have your current email address. Please feel free to write to us or call us whenever you feel up to it)

Love always,

Jamie Kizer

REMEMBERING KERMIT SCOTT IN INDIANA

Kermit Scott, and Aadron, David, “Terr,” and Tracy, were friends at a critical time in the lives of Dena and me, as well as our daughter, Rebecca. We came to Purdue University in 1967 and saw the need to connect our professional lives--teaching and research--with political activism. Kermit and I met during initial meetings of a new activist faculty group that formed shortly thereafter.

That connection launched a twenty-year friendship that profoundly changed my life. Kermit was a towering intellect with a passion for social change. He and Aadron embraced community activism--connecting with labor, creating a food bank, publishing a community newspaper. He worked with vigor helping a dear friend try to construct a humane political system in the Bahamas. On the campus, Kermit dramatically impacted on the lives and consciousness of colleagues and students. Exploring new ideas, often unpopular ones, he had a profound influence on those he touched, even if he did not recognize his influence on others or chose to ignore it.

In those years, Kermit had a twinkle in his eyes and enjoyed self-mocking humor. One of his favorite philosophy students, a “Yippie,” brought a laughing machine to Kermit’s classes and at significant and profound philosophical moments set off the infectious laughing sounds. Kermit admired that student, his boldness, and his recognition of the role of humor in the most serious of human endeavors. In addition, while Kermit led us in activism, in intellect, in poking fun, he cooked the best ribs ever produced. The day-long barbeque at the Scott’s was truly a spiritual experience.

While Kermit’s activism and intellect permanently transformed my life and others I have talked to, he chose to follow different paths over the last twenty years. I regret that we never had a chance to review our years of friendship and activism.
