Carleton Thomas Obituary

Rev. Carleton Lee Thomas Sr.

The Rev. Carleton Lee Thomas Sr., of Lynchburg, died Oct. 3, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jacqueline "Jackie" Grizzard Thomas of 54 years.

He was born in Roanoke on Dec. 11, 1927, to the late Clarence Wilson Thomas and Lilly Kidd Thomas.

He graduated from Jefferson Sr. High School, Roanoke in 1946. He joined the U.S. Navy and served in Sasebo, Japan, from 1946 to 1948. He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1952. He was an avid sports fan. He was on the University of Richmond sports teams, playing football and tennis.

He graduated from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., in 1955. He was ordained to the ministry in 1955. He was an educator and ordained minister serving in private and public schools and later served God through the United Methodist Church. He served the Rockbridge Charge, Staunton District; the Charlotte Charge, Farmville District; North Fluvana Charge, Charlottesville District; and Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church and New Hope/Trinity Charge on the Lynchburg District. He retired from active service in 1993 as an elder.

He leaves to cherish his memories two daughters, Wanda L. Thomas, of Lynchburg, and Robin L. Rowland and husband, Gary; a son, Carleton Lee Thomas Jr., and wife, Bethel; three grandchildren, Dara Rowland and fianc‚, Brandon Brown, Kaley Thomas and friend, Eduardo Aragon, and Jordan Thomas, all of Rustburg; one sister, the Rev. Hazel T. Fitch, of North Carolina; two nephews, Dr. R. W. Thomas, of Atlanta, Ga., William Kemper Fitch III, of Asheboro, N.C.; two special friends, Adrian Harvey and Anthony Adkins, of Rustburg; and a cousin, Leonard Yeatts, of Roanoke.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert W. Thomas, and his sister, Helen Virginia Thomas.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010, at New Hope United Methodist Church in Rustburg, with the Rev. Charlie S. Haley Jr. officiating. Full military honors will be presented by the American Legion Post 16. A visitation will follow services. The family will receive friends at any other time at the residence of 7104 Morton Drive, Lynchburg.

I would like to extend sympathy to the Thomas family. I taught with Mr. Thomas at Franklin County Junior High School in the 1960s. I later connected with him in Gretna when he was the pastor there. I considered him to be a good friend.
