Garnet Marshall Obituary

Garnet Wayne Smith Marshall

Garnet Wayne Smith Marshall, 79, of Lynchburg, was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Robert "Tommy" Thomas Marshall Sr.

Mrs. Marshall was born Sunday, Dec. 28, 1930, in Evergreen, a daughter of the late Wiley J. Smith and Winnie Myers Smith. She was retired from J.C. Penney, where she was a manager. She was a member of Marsh Memorial United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her children, Robert T. Marshall Jr. and wife, Charlotte, of Rustburg, Catherine Elder and husband, Steve, of Lynchburg, and Michael Wayne Marshall and wife, Donna, of Spout Spring; her grandchildren, Robert T. Marshall III and wife, Amy, of Lynchburg, John Douglas Marshall, of Lynchburg, Sarah Garnet Morris and husband, Adam, of Appomattox, William Thomas Marshall, of Lynchburg, Guy Elder and wife, Trish, of Florida, Randy Elder, of Lynchburg, Edie Baldwin and husband, Jerry, of Appomattox, and Stephen Elder and wife, Heidi, of Florida; her sisters, Dora Ranson, of Virginia Beach, and June Lowe and husband, Wilmer, of Abingdon; a brother, Fred Smith, and wife, Ruth, of Appomattox; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Fitzgerald and Mary McDermot, and two brothers, Jimmy Smith and Charlie Smith.

A celebration of Garnet's life will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Sept. 1, 2010, in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Latta Terry officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow the service at the funeral home. Private burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery.

The Marshall family would like to extend their thanks to the staff of Seven Hills Hospice, Runk & Pratt and Heritage Green for the care given to Mrs. Marshall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 823, Lynchburg, VA 24505, or the American Cancer Society, 2316 Atherholt Road, Lynchburg, VA 24501.

I love and will miss my Aunt Garnet. She was like another grandmother to me. Many of my happiest childhood memories have her incorporated in them. May she rest in peace.
