Betty Pullen Obituary

Betty Anne Otey Pullen

Betty Anne Otey Pullen departed this life Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at Avante in Lynchburg. She was born Feb. 7, 1949, to the late John Henry Otey and Annie Beatrice Spinner Otey in Bedford County. She became a member of the Poplar Spring Baptist Church at an early age. She graduated from Susie G. Gibson High School in 1965 and also graduated from an accelerated five-year program at Lynchburg College, thus gaining both a B.A. and MBA degree in 1980. Betty was a strong advocate for education and served as the Executive Director of Project Discovery for many years.

Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John Edward Pullen, and one sister, Brenda Joyce Otey.

She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted daughter, Carletha Pullen Tweedy (Ron), of Lynchburg; two sisters, Jean M. Watson (James), of Burke, and Teresa C. Otey (Thomas Hall), of Goode; six nieces and nephews, Diallo Otey-Baeza, Shanticarol Otey, Shantilee Otey, Isaac Otey-Hall, Jared Watson and Jada Watson; one grandson, Brandon Tweedy, who was her "favorite guy;" two great-nephews, Jeremiah Zarate-Baeza and DeShawn Otey-Hall; and two special cousins that her mother and father reared as their own, Fannie Spinner Crider, of Lynchburg, and John Clifford Spinner (Nea), of Washington, D.C.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, at Poplar Spring Baptist Church, Goode, Pastor, the Rev. H. J. Robertson. The cortŠge will assemble at the church. The family is receiving friends at the home of her daughter, 518 Bent Oak Court, Lynchburg.

In lieu of flowers, Betty's wish would have been that memorial contributions be made to Brandon's college fund c/o his mother, Carletha.

Boy, What a wake-up reminder as I open my computer today. Love and miss this lady more than you'll ever know....my family, my one and only sister for life. Can't believe that it has been nine years since she left my sight but certainly not my heart. There Bettie Ann will remain forever. If she hears me, I say will I always love and remember what a great life we spent together! Rest in Heaven. I'll see you again someday (tears).

May God bless our family. It's been a tough three years, but God is still good. Be strong Carletha, you did good and all that you could possibly do. Just keep thinking about the sweetness of rest for God's weary souls. Your family and friends care very deeply and are here for you. Love you much. Fannie
