Selina Langhorne Davenport Forbes

Selina Langhorne Davenport Forbes was the third of nine children born to the late Bessie and Albert G. Langhorne Sr. on Janu. 25, 1912. She graduated from Dunbar High School and received a bachelor's degree from West Virginia State College (now University). She studied French and Italian, with a minor concentration in music, and she was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She and her first husband, Willis H. Davenport, resided in Greenville, N.C., where she taught French, music, and history at C.M. Eppes High School. She later taught French at J.H. Rose High School and was recognized by the North Carolina Governor, Jim Hunt, as being an exemplary teacher. She assisted her husband throughout his lengthy illness and several years later, she met and married Toney Forbes. She retired from teaching on July 1, 1974. She played the piano and organ for churches within her community. She also taught private pupils applied voice, piano and organ.

She moved back to Lynchburg to be with her remaining family in 1998. She transitioned peacefully on Jan. 7, 2011, at Heritage Green Assisted Living. She is survived by one brother, William D. Langhorne; a devoted niece and nephew, Linda L. Donaldson (David) and Theordore R. Langhorne Jr. (Jessica); a niece, Richie L. Queen (Calvin); three great nephews, Theodore R. Langhorne III, Tinsley J. Langhorne and Calvin Queen; a great niece, Wistar L. Rhodes; two great great-nephews, Scott and Noah Rhodes; two cousins, Herbert Thompson (Gladys) and Alease Dillard; a devoted sister-in-law, Carolyn P. Langhorne; a niece-in-law, Audrey H. Langhorne; a special student Dr. Mickey Thomas Terry; a valued friend Lucille Gorham; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted 11 am, Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at Eighth Street Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery. The family is receiving friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. The cortege will assemble at the church.
