Anne Risher Obituary

Anne Hume Nash Risher

Anne Hume Nash Risher, 89, died on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at her residence. She was born on Feb. 8, 1921, in Norfolk, Va. She moved to Charlottesville at an early age and considered Charlottesville her home until moving to Lynchburg in 1950.

Anne attended local and private schools in Charlottesville and graduated from St. Margaret's School in Tappahannock, Va. During WWII she was active in the Red Cross. She also worked in a munitions plant in Radford, Va.

After WWII, Anne became President of the University League, now the Junior League of Charlottesville. While President, she founded "The Opportunity Shop". It was a success from the start. The shop receives donated clothes and sells them to the public, with proceeds going to deserving charities.

On April 10, 1948, she married John Calhoun Risher; they moved to Lynchburg in 1950. Soon after coming to Lynchburg, Anne was made chairman of the Cot Committee, an organization that helped low income patients obtain hospital admission. She was a member of the Florence Crittendon Board for many years. When the Lynchburg General Hospital moved to its present location, she and a group of ladies founded the Lynchburg General Hospital Womens' Auxilliary. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her husband John Risher, her daughter Alice Risher Painter, and son-in-law James W. Painter, of Los Alamos, N.M. Anne also had three granddaughters, Lauren Painter, Amy Albright and husband Ian, and Anne Corbin and husband Aaron; and five great-grandchildren, Eliana, Teana, and Lacy Albright, and Daniel and Jonas Corbin.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 200 Boston Avenue, Lynchburg, Va .

Anne was a wonderful lady and a good friend to many. She was part of our lives almost from the day that Dot and I married in 1951. I remember how Dot and Anne enjoyed their monthly lunches with "The Girls". She may be gone from this world, but will never be gone from my memory.

Truly a wonderful lady and one who will be sorely missed. She has been a part of our lives for many years. She was a very impordtant part of "The Elite Gourmet Clubl" and she made the finest dish of sweet potatoes anyone ever tasted.
