Peake Jr.

W. Herbert Peake Jr., of Roanoke, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at age 78.

He was an active member of Green Memorial United Methodist Church since 1967, a former board member, and Sunday school class president. Mr. Peake attended Charlotte College (now UNCC) and served in the U.S. Army in the United States and Europe from 1953-55. He then attended University of South Carolina from 1956-58 and graduated with a B.A. in history, class of '58. He is a life member of the Carolina Alumni Association. Upon graduation, he sold industrial equipment in the Greensboro, N.C., area. In 1967, he moved to Roanoke to sell for Oakite Products, Inc., an industrial chemical/cleaner manufacturer. In the early 1990s, he retired and worked approximately 10 years for AML/Quest Labs.

Mr. Peake was preceded in death by his parents, Herb and Mary Peake, and two sisters, Evelyn Reid, of Mooresville, N.C., and Frances Pittman, of Charlotte, N.C.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years, Joann B. Peake; two sons, Walt Peake and his wife, Nancy, of Roanoke, and Mark Peake and his wife, Lila, of Lynchburg; eight grandchildren, Meredith, Kathleen and John J. Peake, of Roanoke, and Mark Jr., John R., Anderson and Lillie and Lauren Peake, of Lynchburg. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and one brother-in-law, Carl Reid, of Lake Norman, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Katherine Peters, and her husband, Eb, of Raleigh, N.C.; and brother-in-law, Joe Beatty, and his wife, Jane, of Greensboro, N.C.

The family would like to gratefully acknowledge Good Samaritan Hospice and, in particular, Michelle and Patty, for their assistance and heart-felt care.

Memorials may be made to the Greene Memorial United Methodist Church Building Fund.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gary Robbins and the Rev. Arthur Grant. A reception will follow immediately after the service at the home of Walt and Nancy Peake at 3047 Bancroft Drive, Roanoke, VA 24014.

Joann,
We wish we could be with you and your family at the service in progress as this is being written. We have so many cherished memories of Herb. He will be missed by so many people whose lives he touched. God bless you and be with you during this sad and difficult time.
