Lester Wingfield Obituary

Lester Irby Wingfield

Lester Irby Wingfield, 97, of First Street, Appomattox, died Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at the Appomattox Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was the loving and devoted husband of Flossie Bradshaw Goodrich Wingfield for 70 years.

Born in Appomattox County on July 11, 1913, he was a son of the late Martha Jane Godsey Wingfield and the late Charles Andrew Wingfield. Lester was a retired painter and served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army. He was a lifelong member of Memorial United Methodist Church, having served many years on the Board of Stewards. He played semi-pro baseball for 16 years, playing two years in the Skyline League. Lester was a member of the U.T.C. for over 50 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Herman Wingfield, of Pamplin, and many devoted nieces and nephews.

Lester was preceded in death by five brothers and six sisters.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday,

Oct. 18, 2010, in Memorial United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Russell Cheatham officiating, with burial to follow in Old Herman Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today, Oct. 17, 2010, at Robinson Funeral Home, and at other times at his residence.
