As I sit so here melancholy
My mind goes back to long ago
A simpler time, when life was jolly
A happy life, I used to know
Morning sun on the window sill
A song in the kitchen, from Mama’s hum
Out to the well, the bucket to fill
Helping with chores before the day begun
Lazy days of summer, under the shade tree
Rosy cheeks and noses from the cold
Stumped toes and scraps on the knee
So happy a life in those days of old
Walks in the woods, berries to pick
Baking cookies, the old porch swing
Kisses on my forehead, when I was sick
Just Mama and me, such a wonderful thing
But things change over the years
The home place, torn down, friends and family gone
The good, the bad, the laughter, the tears
Nothing left, just old memories of Home.
But God has blessed me, o’er and o’er
With precious memories and the bad tucked away
I will see Them all again at Heaven’s door
So “Goodbye,” Mama, until that day.
