Nellie Dowdy Obituary

Nellie M. Dowdy

Nellie Manley Dowdy, 90, of Waynesboro, died Thursday, April 22, 2010, at Dogwod Village Health & Rehab in Orange.

She was born Aug. 18, 1919, in Forest, a daughter of Lawrence B. and Betty Leftwich Manley. She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, Waynesboro, where she was active in the Women's Circle. Also, she was a member of the Waynesboro Home Extension Club, AARP and the Hoe & Hope Garden Club. She had served as a Cub Scout Den Mother and was the #1 baseball fan for her sons.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Clyde W. Dowdy, a sister, Violet Manley, and a brother, Garnet Manley.

Surviving are her sons and their wives, James T. Dowdy and fianc‚e, Sherry Kachur, of Chesapeake, Louis W. and Judith Dowdy, of Dinwiddie County, and Stephen M. and Nancy Dowdy, of Waynesboro; a sister, Arline Manley, of Rustburg; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, April 26, 2010, at McDow Funeral Home, Waynesboro, by Drs. Glen A. Holman, Eugene Woolridge and Albert Connette. Interment will follow in Augusta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be nephews Garnet Manley Jr., Robert Davidson, Ray Dowdy, Bobby Ray Dowdy, Marvin Crank, Joe Dowdy and Ned Dowdy and grandsons, Kenneth "Wil" Wilfong Jr. and Isaac Howell.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 25, 2010, at McDow Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1920-H Medical Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22801, or the Alzheimer's Association, 1160 Pepsi Place, Suite 306, Charlottesville, VA 22901.
