Odell Padgett Obituary

Odell "Toad" Padgett

Toad Padgett, 93, a true American hero, lost his last battle Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010. He was the husband of the late Christine "Tiney" Cox Padgett for 62 years.

As part of his legacy, he leaves a son, Charles Hill (Brenda); daughters, Connie Hall and Susan Padgett; grandsons, Charles Hill Jr. (Jan), Lindsey Hall and Nathan Hall; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Haley Hill. Other survivors include sisters, Doris Garner, Thelma Bell and Frances Gardner (Jack); lifetime friend, Alice Holzheuer; and caregivers, Sue Marose and Martha Lind.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Bowyer Padgett, and best friend, Howard Holzheuer.

Toad was a decorated veteran of World War II, having served in the 29th Infantry Division Company B. He survived the Normandy invasion landing on Omaha Beach June 6, 1944. He was later wounded and only survived because his friend Robert "Nice" Torrence carried him off the battlefield to safety. He spent the rest of his life being thankful to God, living his life as a devoted Christian, a loving husband, father, brother and friend to anyone in need. His true joy in life was helping others.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, at Heritage Funeral Service. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, at Amelon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Paulo Da Silva and the Rev. Russell Cheatham (nephew) with burial to follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Amelon UMC, P.O. Box 739, Madison Heights, VA 24572.

Heritage Funeral Service and Crematory, (434) 239-2405, is assisting the family. Memories and thoughts may be shared with the family at www.heritagefuneraland

Thank You, Mr. Padgett, for your service and dedication to the U.S.A. I never had the privilege of meeting you, but wish I had. You are one of the reasons that I took my family to Normandy this summer so my kids could walk where you fought, and appreciate what you and others sacrificed there. There is no doubt in my mind that you were a good man. My best wishes and sincere condolences to your family. Beth Pinder
