Russell L. Law Jr.

Russell L. Law Jr., 86, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010. Before moving to Lynchburg, he resided in Amherst County for 26 years.

Born in Oklahoma City, Okla., he was the son of Russell L. and Gwendolen Collier Law and was raised in Baltimore County, Md. There he attended Gilman School before attending MIT, from which he graduated in 1948. His college education was interrupted when he served three years in the Army Air Corps as a 1st Lt. in World War II with overseas service in the Philippines (13th Air Force, 5th Bomb Group).

He worked 50 years as Special and General Agent for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in Baltimore; Wichita, Kan.; Miami, Fla.; and Lynchburg. He held the professional designation Chartered Life Underwriter and qualified for membership in the Million Dollar Round Table for many years.

He is survived by his much-loved wife, Edith J. Law, and his five children, Janet Metzger, Mary Kitchens-Law (Karen), Russell Law III (Nancy), Alex Law (Melissa) and Kevin Bates (Ionia); and five grandchildren, Nicholas Law, Gray and Kirby Metzger, Cristina and Alex Kitchens-Law.

He was predeceased by his grandson, Austin Law.

Russ served locally as President of the Clifford Ruritan Club, the Central Virginia Alzheimer Association, the Commission Against Domestic Violence and Citizens for Adult Literacy and Learning (CALL). He had been Commander of the Piedmont Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars and was instrumental in the establishment of the Episcopal Thrift Shop in Amherst.

The family wishes to thank Doctors Geeta Rakheram, John Plankeel, Peter O'Brien and the nursing staff of the Pulmonary Unit of Lynchburg General Hospital for their kind concern and support.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 605 Clay St., Lynchburg, with burial following in the church columbarium. Following the service, there will be a reception at the Glenbrooke Clubhouse.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Russ' memory should be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Ascension Episcopal Church, or to CALL, P.O. Box 123, Monroe, VA 24574.

Our deepest sympathies to the family. I only met "Big Russ" a few times, but he was always a kind, gentle man. No doubt he will be greatly missed. Marty and Bobby Svoboda, Memphis, TN

Russ popped into my office a few weeks ago just to say hi. He had a big smile, and wanted to know how things were going with me. Several years ago he was instrumental in providing work for an unemployed man who had some problems. He always had concern for ones downcast. What a great heart. I will miss you.

My sister and I helped a friend with a catered party at Russell's and Edith's home in Amherst County many years ago. I also saw Russell many times when I worked at Hill Hardware in Amherst. What a great man!

Uncle Russ was a wonderful man: cheerful, optimistic, kind, and active. He was my mother's little brother. Now that family has passed on and we are left without them. We miss them.
