"Bill"

William Francis Farquhar William Francis "Bill" Farquhar, age 95, of Bristow, passed away January 4th, 2011 at INOVA Fair Oaks Hospital.

Born September 30th, 1915 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Arthur Farquhar, Sr., and Julia Brooke Farquhar. On December 27th, 1949 in Norfolk, Va., he married the former Margaret Virginia WanDelken, who preceded him in death.

Simply known to his family and friends as Bill, he graduated from Gonzaga High School in Washington, D.C. and later attended college in West Virginia. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II, with the Battery B, 237th AAA in the South Pacific, and because of Bill's leadership following the War, the Batter B Company, was one of the only groups that continued to meet annually. This reunion was held several times in the Manassas area.

Bill began his career as an Athletic Director on August 1st, 1940 at Linton Hall School, and proudly served in this capacity for over 70 years. He also taught English as a second language, and conducted many summer camps over his years of service. He was a faithful member of the Manassas Host Lions Club, where he was a Life and Charter member from the club beginnings on July 26th, 1947. He was the Past President of the club from 1953 to 1954, Committee Chairman for the Groundhog Supper from 1993 to 1995; he was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow award, the Club's Tail Twister from 1995 to 2010; and the Advisor of the Linton Hall Leo Club from its inception. Bill was the last remaining Charter Member of the Knights of Columbus, George Brent Council, #5332. Bill took his First Degree on April 4, 1961. He was Grand Knight from 1963 to 64, and was the past Faithful Navigator of Commodore John Barry Assembly. He was a mentor of many past Grand Knights and Past Faithful Navigators. He taught two generations of Knight's the importance of living life according to the tenants of our faith, and as an Oblate of St. Benedict to live life according to The Rule of Benedict.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur "Butch" Farquhar. Survivors include his loving daughter, Rosemary Farquhar of Linden; and two grandchildren, Angela Render Page and her husband Brian of North Carolina; and Charles A. Render of Bristow; and one nephew, Edward A. Farquhar of Manassas.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 9th, 2011 from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas, where a Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. At Bill's request, there will also be a period of time for Storytelling during the Wake. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, January 10th, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the William Farquhar Sports Center, 9535 Linton Hall Road, Bristow, Va. The family will receive friends for a second visitation one hour prior to the Mass. Interment will immediately follow in the Benedictine Sisters' Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may take the form of a donation to the Linton Hall School, the Manassas Host Lions Club, the Saint Benedict Monastery, or the Knights of Columbus, George Brent Council #5332. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, under the direction of Michael Post. Please sign the guestbook at www.bakerpostfh.com.

Rosemary- Sorry for your loss.

January 9, 2011

My brother and I went to Linton Hall Military School in the mid 1960's and Bill was there and he was an incredible man of high morals and always full of energy. He always took time to talk and discipline students in a proper way. We need more men like him today. We shall mourn with his family. God bless you.

I went to school with Bill's granddaughter, Angela and would see him at church/school events. He always had a smile on his face. I saw him a few years ago at church and we had a very nice conversation. My prayers go out to Angela and her family, I'm sure he will be greatly missed.

Sincerely,
Theresa Grimes Blanton

Mr Bill was a wonderful person and will never be forgotten. My son, Austin, was a member of the Leo Club, a student at Lindon Hall, and graduated in 2002. We all loved him.
