Helen Burke Smoot Helen Burke Smoot, age 86, of Washington, Va., died Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal, Va., surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Smoot was born August 25, 1924, in Washington, Va. , daughter of the late Gabriel and Florence Foster Burke. She was a housewife and in her later years was employed with Aileen in Flint Hill, Va., until her retirement.

Mrs. Smoot was predeceased by her loving husband of 70 years, Claybert Edward Smoot; a daughter, Shirley Nalls; a granddaughter, Jennifer Leigh Wines; and a son-in-law, James Samuel Wines; and two brothers and a sister Charles Lewis Burke, Moses Burke, and Violet Baldwin.

She is survived by four children, Lois Ann Williams of Washington, Va., Jeanne Pomeroy, (Steve) of Front Royal, Va., Deborah Kaye Wines, of Chester Gap, Va., and Charles Milton Smoot, (Mary) of Front Royal, VA.;Eleven Grandchildren, James A. Williams, Jr., Kevin Scott Williams, Janie Wines Phillips, James D. Wines, Shelly Morefield, Sherry VanOver, Brittany Fletcher, Sheila Painter, Brian Pomeroy, Corey Pomeroy, and Angela Deavers; 17 great-grand-children; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by four sisters, Mary Ida Owens, Janet Alther, Doris Payne, and Cecil Baldwin; and four brothers, Paul Burke, William Burke, Davis Burke, and Rannie Burke.

Pallbearers will be Gary Smoot, Randy Smoot, William Smoot, Jeffrey Burke, Danny Baldwin, and William H. Smoot.

Honorary pallbearers will be the grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 3 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Phil Bailey. Interment will follow at Washington Masonic Cemetery, in Washington, Va. The family will receive friends on Saturday, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home.
