We invite family and friends to listen to Shirley speak for herself during the interview she so generously gave us. http://www.robsny.org/Archive/Announcements/AnnouncementsFeb13.htm#interview

Shirley was the consummate professional activist teacher, union representative and mentor to new arrivals to the profession when in 1962 I first taught in Brentwood. She was always fun to be around, had great stories and was dedicated to her community in Oakdale where she raised funds as a volunteer for Dowling College. She'd retired from teaching in 1980 but when I last saw her for the interview she gave ROBS History Project in 1999, she was the same good soul, much older by then, that I had had the privlege of knowing years before. Its that sharp minded Shirley Hodges I will always remember.

I shall never forget Shirley helping me as a new teacher in the English Department when I first arrived in the ROSS Bldg back in 1963.Her help to me was invaluable. We shall miss her but as others have said she will not be forgotten.

Shirley was always an inspiration to us because of her endless energy, creativity and intelligence. Whatever challenges she faced, she faced with courage and strength and optimism. I will never forget her exhuberent sense of fashion and style, her stories of her days as an airplane pilot, and her great love and admiration for each of her sons and their families. She was fun to be with, and we always laughed together. I still make her famed red pepper jam.

To the Hodges family...my heart goes out to you at this time of sorrow. Psalms 46:1, "God is our refuge and strength. A help that is readily found in times of distress."

My most heartfelt sympathy to the wonderful family of my dear friend and colleague , Shirley. I shall never forget her honesty and loyalty to me, and to the teachers she represented as chief delegate. Her mature wisdom and caring applied to her English students as well. She is gone now,but will never be forgotten .
