Michael LiCalzi Obituary

LiCALZI-1st Lt. Michael Lucian. Michael died on Thursday, May 11th in Al Anbar Province, Iraq while in the service of his nation. He was 24 years old. His death took place while he was a platoon leader in A Company of the United States Marine Corps 2nd Tank Battalion. Michael and his three other Marine comrades drowned as a result of an accident involving their M1A1 Battle Tank. He was born on Long Island, NY on April 11, 1982 with his twin brother Greg. Michael grew up in Garden City, NY and attended Chaminade High School, Class of 2000, where he was a member of the track, cross country and crew teams. As a child and a young man Mike had always expressed to his family the goal of one day becoming a Marine. Following an arduous admissions process he was appointed to the United States Naval Academy and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in May 2004. At the academy he was a model student, courageous boxer and active leader of the 30th Company where he developed strong and lasting friendships. Mike was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the USMC at graduation and attended The Basic School in Quantico, VA. It was there that he took the opportunity to make friends with Marines from all corners of the country. He elected to enter armor school at US Army Armor Center, Fort Knox, Kentucky where he was the honor graduate of his training company. Mike was deployed to Iraq with A Company in late March of this year. Everyone who knew Mike will agree that he was an honest, ethical, modest, diligent and hardworking student and Marine, and that he was exceptionally loyal and fiercely dedicated to his family, friends, and the Corps. Everywhere he went and in everything he did Michael gave 100%, whether as a LiCalzi, Flyer, Midshipman, or Teufelhund. Among his many interest Mike was a voracious reader, loved to surf, play poker, try new beers, handicap thoroughbreds, watch (but no longer participate in) boxing matches, and root for the Mets. Mike was also an avid outdoor sportsman. His mother and father, Carol and Gregory LiCalzi of Celebration, FL and Westhampton Beach, NY, his sister Elizabeth, his brothers Gregory and Luke, and a large extended family grievously mourn him. Friends are welcome to call at Farichild Sons Funeral Home, 1201 Franklin Avenue, Garden City (516-746-0585) on Thursday 7-9PM and Friday 2-4 and 7-9PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph's RC Church in Garden City, at 9:30AM Saturday, May 20th with burial at Long Island National Cemetery (Farmingdale). In lieu of flowers Mike's family believes that he would appreciate donations to Chaminade High School or the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.

Dear Mr.& Mrs LiCalzi and Family
I have done many special events for the Town of Hempstead and have been moved by many of them. This morning May 8th at Lido West will forever remain in my heart. To talk with Michael's family, friends and comrades made me feel like I knew him. No longer will that plaque be just another memorial to me but a rememberance of a very special young man. I look foward to seeing you all next year when we come together to celebrate Michael's life. It was an honor to help celebrate the life of a true American hero

Dear Michael,
I have never met you, but I pass by your memorial and your pathway at West Lido Beach every time I surf there. We are so lucky to have people like you who sacrifice so much so people like me can surf and enjoy our freedom. All I can say is thank you for making the ultimate sacrifice.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Michael, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

May 2, 2007

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

We can't imagine what you have been going through since being notified of the death of your young Warrior. The Military and families all over the USA and world are grieving with you and praying for you. I am deeply sorry for the loss of your son. We are shirt-tail relatives, but relatives non-the-less and a loss in the family echoes like thunder on the plains. I'd like to express my thanks to the service Michael dedicated himself to. As a former soldier myself, it's always sad to hear about a fallen comrade. My hope is that his memory be captured in all our hearts. I also hope that his heroic service to our country, and to the nation of Iraq, be a testament to his honor. God bless.

To the LiCalzi family, No words can ease the pain you feel, know that your son died a gallent and heroic death. He was in the best of company ,I've read about the other marines that were with him and they all were "the few and the proud." Among those few was my nephew, Lance Corperal David J. Grames Sanchez. I still find it impossible to believe, may God help ease your suffering during this difficult time. Elmhurst high school had a memorial service, for my nephew , and a Johnathan Blair that also gave his all 6 months ago. The whole school was like a family, it was a very touching tribute to the schools alumni David and Jon. Please know that your pride is shared from the heartland to the east and the west. Pray for all our boys fallen and those still able to stand and carry on the fight. Brothers forever never forgotten. Semper Fi.

I went to Chaminade with Mike and Greg. He was a great friend, so hard-working and committed to the Corps and to everything that he did. Rest in Peace, Mike, you are truly a role model to us all.

We loved Michael as a boy and as a man. His dear twin brother Gregory eloquently described Michael's strong character traits in his beautifully written and delivered eulogy yesterday - independence, commitment, and love. Michael's exemplary life provides invaluable lessons and serves as an inspiration as we try to make him proud of us.

Dear Licalzi Family

Even though we have never met I feel as if we are part of a family. My daughter's fiancee was killed by an IED in Iraq on 10/3/2005. It is my prayer that you will feel God holding you close to his heart just as He has held my family these past 7 months. You all will be in my prayers as you walk through the difficult days ahead.

To the family of 2ndLt Licalzi:

I had the privilege of knowing your son several months before he deployed to Iraq and was immediately impressed with his ambition, motivation, and genuine desire to lead and care for his Marines. Although this world is devoid of such a magnificent young officer, heaven has truly gained a special guardian angel that will always shine down upon all of us. I pray for the Licalzi family and pray for the souls of Lt Licalzi, his tank crew, and the brave Marines that must continue on in harm's way without them. God Bless you all.

Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. The Marines don't have that problem.

Thank you, Michael, for your sacrifice in serving our country.

While I never personally knew Michael, after reading his beautifully written obituary, I feel like I gave known him for a long time. No words can ever express the sympathy I have for your family; only know that so many of us care and appreciate Michael's service and his life. He sounds like he made a difference and was the kind of guy I would have liked to have known. I have served on the University of Virginia's faculty with Michael's aunt, Bernadette Black, who is a wonderful person, and I know deeply grieving Michael's loss. My thoughts, sympathies, and prayers are with you all. As a former Vietnam veteran and Marine Corps officer, I salute your son. Semper Fi to Michael and your family.

To The LICALZI Family- As a fellow Chaminade graduate of the class of 98', I was in disbelief and heartbroken to hear that another Chaminade family had lost their son. I am now a Navy LT in the reserves, and I want you to know that Michael is a true inspiration to me. I will think of him and you every day, as I do for Ron and his family, while I continue to serve in the Navy. Till our mission is completed!!

With Resepct and Admiration,

To the LiCalzi family,

I never knew Michael, but what I have been reading about him fills my heart. I will forever keep him in my thoughts and prayers.

My husband has been deployed to Iraq for eleven months now.... I currently live in Garden City, and I attend St Josephs with my children, where they also attend school. There are several connections I feel with you. I will be at the funeral tomorrow and while your family and friends will not know me, perhaps there will be some comfort in knowing that many "ordinary Americans" like me, truly care and appreciate the sacrafices Michael made. We share your grief and we are a very grateful nation.

I pray that in time, you will find some peace in knowing that he fulfilled his dream of being a Marine and clearly did so with dignity, integrity, honor, and grace. I will pray that your beautiful memories of every precious minute spent with Michael will someday take the place of much of the sorrow that is flooding your heart at this time. You will not know me tomorrow, but perhaps you will know that for every one person like me there, there are at least hundreds of other Americans who wished they could be.... to say, "Thank you....You are all in our prayers."

May God hold you all very close at this profoundly sad time. God Bless you.. and God Bless America.
